Black Cast Iron Plain Fireback - 20 x 17 inch

I purchased this in order to better heat my house instead of running up our gas bill. I will say it did improve the heat production but not as much as others were saying. It does however keep warm after the fire has gone out which was nice and keeps the coals hot for longer. I think this paired with a better fireplace and set up would help more than what I currently have

I bought this for two reasons, none of which had to do with esthetics. To make my fireplace more efficient and to protect the brick on the back of my fireplace. It’s doing both of those things. The cast iron gets up to 400 degrees with a 750 degree coal bed and flame. It will take a couple hours for the cast iron to get under 200 degrees after the fire goes out. This cast iron acts as a battery that stores heat and distributes it after the fire goes out. It not only generates more heat and reflects it into the room but it also increases the chance of a live coal bed in the bottom ready for you to throw a log on in the morning without having to start another fire. The paint peels off during the first burn, which is the only reason I dropped it to 4 stars. This product is very effective and I don’t care esthetics so I’m pleased. If you are going for esthetics this isn’t the one, if you want a cheap but quality product as it pertains to efficiency, this more than does the job. Don’t expect it to make your zero clearance fireplace heat a 2000 square foot house by itself. But if you’re 800 to 1200 square feet and you’re circulating air this fireback will put out a LOT of heat and help you single handedly heat the entire house during the more mild months. You’ll need a supplemental heat source when you start getting around temperatures in the teens.
