They need to provide zip ties as a solution to these falling off all the time. Glue (per their recommendation) does not work.

When I wrote the following answer I thought you were talking about the mount itself not the little rubber caps. I never had a problem with the rubber caps, except when my mother-in-law pulled them off to hand me my phone. I have ram grips on several of my bikes to hold my phone. I have moved the grips from time to time. I have a bag of zip ties I bought at the hardware store. I just cut the old tie and put on a new one when I change bikes or location on the handle bars. I didn't even know glue was an option as my Ram mount came with zip ties.

Will #8 screw thread protectors work?

The caps I purchased where press on. They would press on over a threaded stud. My mount has a flat finger to clamp my phone. They work great.

What size flat stock do these fit? In other words, what are the width and thickness of the X-grip metal posts/arms?

I got you. The posts on my X-grip average 0.205" wide x 0.059" thick.

Can these be made from a tougher material like urethane? The metal cuts through the rubber and now I have to buy my third set.

I have not cut through any set I have purchased. I keep losing them. If there’s a better material out there, let me know
