Geronimo

Enjoyable But Hardly A Classic
This is an enjoyable and very watchable movie from 1962 that starred Chuck Connors. I have seen where some reviewers have called it a western classic, but I think that's a bit of a stretch. While Connors gave a good performance in the role of Geronimo, Ross Martin,Armando Silvestre, and Kamala Devi didn't have a half way decent script to work with. Poor Adam West and Pat Conway respectively, gave a performance that is barely worth a mention. I noticed some made mention of Chuck Connors being a white man in a Native American role, and Kamala Devi having a heritage of English-Welsh and Indian (her father was an Indian surgeon from Bombay, British India). At the time of this movie's making, there were very few Native American actors during the period, and for a long time after. Many actors who portrayed Native American roles were primarily of Italian or Mexican descent.

Entertaining
Chuck Connors made a believable Geronimo. Excellent movie. Enjoyed seeing Adam West (first Batman) as the Lt. and Denver Pyle.

it was films like these that first introduced me to Native Americans
Actually, this film has a lot wrong with it: There's a white man playing Geronimo, a woman from India playing a Native American. I gave it a five star because it's an epic, classic western. Chuck Connors absorbed himself into the part of the Native American warrior. When I was a child, it was films like these that first introduced me to Native Americans, and the fllm clearly showed that Geronimo had good reason to go on the warpath. The dishonest Army commander, the sell-out minister, the greedy land developers: The film lays out the landscape of these criminals and low-lifes who would kill men, women, and children to get land and money. The DVD arrived in a timely manner, in good condition, and with several languages.

3.5
What a great movie for a kid in 1960's. That's when I saw it and now again.Absolutely nothing to do with the truth, tho' there are parts that do hint at some of it.Perhaps needless to say, it's not as good as an adult ...but I would watch it again.

A 6 foot 6 inch Geronimo from 101 FILMS
The DVD from 101 FILMS is excellent quality, Ratio 2.35.1 (widescreen, bars top and bottom) showing the locations beautifully. Good colour and sound. Sadly I can't be as enthusiastic about the film. If you can overcome the serious miscasting of the giant blue eyed Chuck Connors as the short rather unattractive Geronimo, you can enjoy the best performence in the film. Give Chuck his due, he carries the film with his personality and gymnastic displays (see him vault on to his horse at least 6 times.) Sadly the rest of the cast doesn't come up to scratch. Pat Conway overplays the villain role, and spends the entire film with a huge sneer on his face. Adam West just looks worried and has a nothing part. Ross Martin and Armando Sylvestre try hard but have a poor script. Also trying hard but not quite right is Kamali Devi as Chuck's wife. Enid Jaynes (who?) as Ross's wife would have been a better bit of casting. John Anderson, Denver Pyle and Lawrence Dobkin hand in solid work. The photography and direction are good, and I may have been a bit too harsh in my criticisms because I did enjoy most of the film, but in all honesty it isn't a classic. Recomended with reservations (oops) for western completists like me.
