Can it be used to smelt gold or silver?

I’m not sure. I only use mine to make bbq sauce.

As was said, Columbia. We have a number of Victoria cast iron pieces. They are excellent, just like Lodge in the US. Their Tortilla press is the best out there.

Does the handle get hot?

Yes I use this small pot to melt lead i use leather gloves and a folded potholder
