Yes, they work with any type of yarn or thread.

Does this help with yarn burns?

I don't use them because I find them to be in the way more than a help.

Will this work for left-handed people?

If you are knitting Continental, the method is suitable for both left- and right-handed knitters, so the yarn guide would be worn on the left index finger. I suppose you could wear it on the right hand. I don't use the yarn guides because they didn't fit my finger properly and I couldn't figure out how to adjust the size. I also ended up holding both colors of yarn in my right hand, because it was easier for me to do colorwork that way.
