The best — well, maybe not. UPDATED
11/9/2018: I bought two pairs of these socks in the spring of 2018. See photo comparing a brand new pair on the left to a six-month old sock on the right. You can see the one on the right is worn through at the heel. I love these socks and hate to say it, but these have not been the most durable socks I have found. After purchasing them this April, wearing them for a few weeks during the spring, and then now for a few weeks in the fall, a hole has already worn through the heel! I did contact the company about a question regarding a torn stitch in the ball of the foot, which happened when I snagged a floorboard, but I carefully darned the snag and that part of the sock will “last a lifetime.”But the worry I had at the beginning of this major acquisition remained—the heels are not reinforced and wear through quickly, without even making it through a single winter yet. I would recommend these socks for sleeping and coffee in the morning, because they are quite warm and lovely. I don’t know how the store can say that they last a lifetime if they only last through the warm six months of the year, not even a winter when they would have heavy use. They wore out before they were used enough to wash them even once. All of the commentary about hand washing should be ignored...4/18/2018: I have spent an embarrassing amount of money in pursuit of the perfect wool sock. The four ply Dachstein is the very best of Europe, UK, Australia, NZ, and the US. I do worry about the heel going out first, but I also know that due to the custom sizing, the toe will not go out at all. I wish the heels were braided one more time with a nylon ply. This would make the socks nearly indestructible.

This if a five [5 *****] star review.
This is a five [5 *****] star review. Why did I click 4 stars? Because I never read the five star review to decide if a product has value. I start with the four stars and go to the three stars. I also never read the one star reviews as I find them a bit to grumpy. So I'm hoping that you read this review as very, very positive.First:These socks are too thick to put them and my foot into a shoe, but then I didn't buy them for walking around. I bought them because I wanted warm feet for watching TV and sleeping. As I get older my feet seem to get colder and for the past few winters my feet have been cold. These sock were the answer to getting my feet warm again. THEY ARE WONDERFUL! They are expensive but craft is time consuming and should be rewarded when well done. These are well done. They are well worth it simply for their physical comfort. They also happen to be beautiful in a crafty sort of way.For me, "these socks aren't made for walking", but they are made for keeping feet warm on cool evenings. I'll buy another pair as soon as I save some money as I want to make sure I alway have a pair to wear.

Excellent Pure Wool Socks
These are the best wool socks you will find. They are pure wool so there is no stretch as there is with nylon blends and it's not soft and fuzzy like a fleece-lined sock, but nothing compares to the warmth and moisture control that pure wool provides. And this is the best pure wool blend you'll find.I do a lot of cold weather fishing and have experimented with many socks while wading through icy rivers. None compare to the warmth and moisture wicking that these socks provide. You pay for quality, but I found it to be well worth it.

Very warm socks
I had been buying ultra thick alpaca socks hand knitted, but could no longer find ones that weren't mixed with tercel or cotton and thus not as warm. I got these yesterday and slipped them on and kept them on through the night - perfect warmth and my feet didn't get too hot. I wear a size 9 1/2 shoe and ordered the 10 but it is way too big but I'm keeping them anyway. I will order a few more at the next smaller size - these are perfect for sleeping in.

Unmatched for extreme conditions.
These 4-Ply Austrian Ragg socks are unmatched for extreme conditions. They are fabulous, but so thick that you will have to match them to boots that fit. Wool retains its insulating value even when wet, and these socks are something close to the wool felt liners in Sorel winter boots. I also use them for slippers around the camp! Accurately sized for European shoe sizes: mine are marked as 47-48.

The service was REALLY great, I purchased two sock forms and they onlyhad one in stock so they called me on the phone and asked if they could send just oneand then the second one when they got them in, then when I finally gotthe second form they put a little stuffed toy in the box with a note thanking mefor waiting. Now that's what I call REALLY trying to suceed.I really like these socks, they are very thick and my size without stretching, I bought a second pair.I have a size 15 foot

The four ply are amazing and much warmer but don't have the usual wool ...
The two ply have enough stretch that they fit perfectly. The four ply are amazing and much warmer but don't have the usual wool stretch that the 2 ply does so they require manual stretching over a bottle before use.....not too much effort for the amazing performance of these sock.

Warm Socks
These socks are pretty darn warm. I wear them when I am hunting in winter in Wisconsin. My feet always get cold when I sit in 20 degrees F or lower for more then 3 hours. These socks did keep my feet relatively warm as compared to what i normally experience. They are very thick - like wool boot liners - so make sure that you have boots that are about one size bigger then what you would normally wear because you won't get your normal boots on with these socks. Also - these socks are pretty difficult to get on and off. They are very pricey but I find them worth it when I am on a 6 or 8 hour sit hunting whitetail in 15 degree F temps!
