What is the difference between this $50 model and the $40 model?

The both models have the same functions, but they are using the different APP and server. The $49.99 model is using Tuya solution, and the $39.99 model is using eWeLink solution. The smart devices which are using the same APP can works with each other. If you have no other smart device that using Tuya Smart APP or Smart Life APP or eWeLink APP, I suggest you buy the $49.99 model, because it can work in LAN.

I have to pay 5 dollars per month if I want Alexa to let me know i left the garage door open. Is that correct?

I am not sure what fee you are referring to. I have the ewelink version of this and it has worked flawlessly since I got it 6 months ago. I do not pay any thing extra to work with alexa. I also have other devices that work with smart life and there is no fee involved with smart life also. My only issue is that Alexa will NOT tell me if the door is open or closed. I actually have to open the Alexa app and look at the status. Also, as far as I know this device does not automatically tell me if the garage door has been left open, you have to open the smart life/ewelink/alexa app to view the status. hopefully this helps. Like I said, I have been using this for 6 months with absolutely no issues. For the price I am very happy.
