Does this actually make sound or is it really just a model?

For the most part, it is a model.  A full-sized instrument is much larger thus having a larger sound chamber. It would also have metal strings. This one doesn't have the strength required for metal strings and the nylon ones will make sounds, but very quietly.

Can you decorate or finish the wood before assembly?

Accepted Answer

Of course you can, I have stained and cleared everyone that I have built so far (8). The problem is with laser cutting is it burns the edges, so you need to lightly sand all the exposed edges to get a really nice finish. Or at least sand the surface and only use a stain that matches the burnt wood. It does however, add a huge amount of time to assembly, but it is well worth it.

What happens if I break a few pieces?

I've had some pieces break rendering the instrument sort of useless, though it continues to look very pretty.  Even if you could replace some parts, you'd have quite a lot of deconstruction to do which is not easy since some pieces are locked in place.
Personally, I had some pieces break while trying to tune the instrument, breaking a tuning peg.  There are quite a few replacement parts included with the model (spare parts on the individual boards) but as mentioned, accessing the broken pieces would require a lot of work in order to replace them.

Yes, there are a few sheets in the back of the assembly instructions with simple melodies. In addition, you can find more through the manufacturer's website.
