A well presented, informative and fascinating read!
I knew a little about Lawn Road Flats and its architect Wells Coats before buying this but was delighted to read the full back storey. It covers the history of Jack & Molly Pritchard, who commissioned Coates to design the building and investigates the ethos behind it. The book also follows Pritchard’s Isokon furniture business, the Bauhaus masters who fled Germany to take refuge in the UK before heading further West, and the subsequent fate of the building through the course of the Twentieth Century. All this information is conveyed in an accessible voice and laid out with a fine array of period photographs and graphics. The only negative is that I now want to fill my home with reproduction ISOKON Plus furniture, which doesn’t come cheap these days!

The book about Isokon that we were waiting for
A truly excellent and approachable book about the Isokon Lawn Road Flats. This covers the design, history, people, life inside them and modern appreciation. The writing is not academic making the book readable.I am pleased that the design and layout of the book is in keeping with the early modernism style. For anyone interested in Isokon, this is the first book to get. Also do look up and support the continuing British studio who make wonderful furniture and items with the classic design seen in the book.

Excellent much-awaited story
The Isokon is one if the most exciting buildings in Britain, but its story was little known up until this book. It’s excellent, telling the story in concise, clear prose with lots of detail that never becomes overwhelming. The building was crucial in the Modernist movement in Britain, and now it has its story properly told. Great pictures, ads, graphics and maps too. Must have.

Radical Designers, Spies & Modernist Ideals
A must for design buffs but also just a great read about the fascinating avant garde set (designers, architects & spies) who lived in this one iconic London building and hung out in its private members club from 1930’s and 40’s.
