The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer: Paws & Claws Mystery Series #2

A delightful mystery with Trixie, Twinkletoes, and Mrs. Mewer
It's "Howloween" at the Sugar Maple Inn and Holly has finally gotten moved into her suite at the inn but has yet to unpack. Boxes line her rooms, but Trixie, her dog and Twinkletoes, her cat, don't mind because they like to play amongst the packings. Holly hasn't had time to unpack or to do anything on her own time because the Inn is very busy at the moment with the arrival of the ghost hunting group, The Apparition Apprehenders have a television program and they'll be filming their ghost hunt at the old Wagtail Springs Hotel which has been unoccupied for a long time. It does happen to be where paranormal activity sometimes takes place and the townspeople tend to stay their distance from it. By the creepy old hotel, there is a gazebo that has some water in the center. When Holly goes to the hotel and the most famous of the haunting spots, the gazebo, her dog and cat know something isn't right, and upon looking in the gazebo, she finds a dead body. The scene is very similar to the legend of the haunting that took place there long ago.Officer Dave Quinlan is the first person who is always called at the first sign of trouble, and in this second book in Krista Davis's series, he has his hands full and a lot of sleepless nights ahead of him. There are other guests staying in the inn, and it seems like everyone is suspicious of everyone else when it comes to the murder. To top it off, a strange but handsome man has appeared in town and he is up to something suspicious himself. Holly's friend Holmes is in town again and to put the icing on the cake, her former boyfriend shows up trying to win her back.Holly has a missing cat on her hands, too, when ghost hunter Eva Chevalier can't find her Siamese cat, Mrs. Mewer. Another mystery to solve when things are bad enough! This is a delightful mystery made more fun by the very interesting and sometimes quirky characters that the author has fully fleshed out. I love Holly's ways of shortening her duties and the fact that she can get ready for a party, work or about anything in a few minutes and look passable. Aunt Birdie is still Aunt Birdie and it is beyond me how Holly keeps her patience with her. I would be crazier than Aunt Birdie.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I have reserved the next one in the series. I'm looking forward to it.

Enjoyable but some irritating aspects.
Enjoyed this second in a series about a pet-friendly town with no cars! The author supposedly has a brood of cats. Why then does she write about people dressing up cats (99% of cats hate this), and cats just running around free with dogs, especially at a parade. Many dogs will chase cats, it would seem very unwise to just let them run around together. Why not include pet rats running around free as well and see how that works out? Also, most cats tend to be loners and don't like strange cats, whereas dogs are pack animals and do enjoy the company of other dogs.Another problem with the book is that Mark tells everyone he has broken up with Mallory, hadn't had much of a relationship before that, and hasn't seen her in a year, yet everyone feels he should be in mourning over her death. Why? One of the inn's workers, Zelda, is a suspect in the murder because she is interested in Felix, and Mallory had been flirting with Felix. Huh??? Zelda had met Felix just the day before. Why on earth could anyone be so stupid as to think someone would murder over a man she barely knew? And then there is the screaming. There was entirely too much screaming going on in the book. Irritating. Holly seems to scream at anything. Another problem is the boarding habits. Mark let Mallory stay in his house when she shows up unannounced, and Holly lets her old boyfriend Ben stay in her apartment when he just shows up. Would anyone be that silly? The excuse is that the hotels and inn is booked up. Tough. And a bit of sloppy research - the books says that (this is the end of October), by 8:30 PM, the sun had set. Huh? It would have set 2 hours before that, wouldn't it?

This has been one of my favourite Kindle finds. I love this characters and the whole idea of a pet-centred town. The books are a fun read with only a hint of romance which I am very happy to read again. Can't wait for book three.
