I keep mine a little over half and it sucks pretty well. For those that gave negative comments about the suction cups, you need to clean your aquarium walls. Algae and/or anything slimy on the aquarium walls will affect the suction. Don't blame the product or seller, you need to clean your tank. I've had zero issues with the suction cups and the device itself. I had bought an Oase skimmer for $39, that was ridiculous, I got this one for half the price and works even better. It is often sucking in too much air and blows so many bubbles it frightens my fish.** A: I cut the skimmer media in half and sandwiched some filter floss the tweet the two half’s. I haven’t had micro bubbles since. Perhaps it just slowed the flow similar to closing the output slide. I do know it that cleans the water a bit more this way as an added benefit. **Q: Can the suction cups be replaced?** A: I don’t see that they can. You can figure out a work around with plasti-molded magents though. Worked just fine on my older skimmer. **Q: is this unit self adjust for different water level?** A: About an inch of play really. The plastic top that slides in the top of the unit is about 2 and1/2 inches long, so it can handle an inch fluctuation either way. This didn’t work for me since my sump water level raises about 5 inches when I turn off my return pump for feeding. However, I do not dislike the skimmer. It works very well and clears film on the surface in a minute for a 20g long. 0 noise. Install is easy, just stick it in the tank and plug it in. Value foe money well worth it. Only problem i have is tinkering with the water lvl, especially if you have ta k with the plastic rim. I lucked out as I rub it 1/4 below the rim, otherwise it won't work.
