The convenience continues thanks to the included charging cord’s magnetic, snap-fit connection making recharging your phone headset quick and easy.

Review: The Best Headset Available on the Market but Have the Right Expectations - This headset is not perfectly perfect in every way but it is the best that you can buy. This is the only headset in the Plantronics lineup listed as having "premium" quality sound. It is Plantronics' flagship headset. Plantronics is the industry leader in earpiece headsets. If you are looking for the highest-quality headset you can buy, look no more. You have come to the right page. The primary complaint I've read about on the Plantronics customer service site is that after two years the battery will die a natural death due to old age. So do realize that this will not last forever. If your battery dies while the headset is under warranty, that's too soon and Plantronics will replace it. If your battery dies in less than 2 years but out of warranty, Plantronics is currently offering customers substantial discounts to buy replacements. (Save your receipt! Scan it if you're paperless. Or buy it from desertcart where they will keep a record for you.) I just bought my second one - the first lasted about 4 years for me with light use. I did read that some can get extra life out of their battery by putting the headset into a ziploc and then into the freezer overnight... so if you're here for a replacement, you might try that first and buy a little more time. I got a few extra months out of mine by discarding the (optional accessory) case I was using to charge it and by charging it directly through the OEM cord that came with it (so save that too!). WHAT YOU GET: Packaging is Easy to Open: there is a large sticker sealing the opening to the smallish box closed. That is easily cut with a pair of scissors. Then pull out the cardboard wings that are tucked into slots on each side of the front of the box and open it up. - Plantronics headset (battery is permanently installed) - Proprietary charging cord with separate wall plug - Two additional ear plugs -- larger and smaller than the one preinstalled on the headset - Foam covers for the ear plugs, to use or not as you prefer - Instruction Booklet - Instructions on Firmware Update - Safety Warnings - Some stuff in another language The cord is USB on the wall end and proprietary on the headset end (only matches the headset). That means that you can plug the cord into the computer to get firmware and software updates from Plantronics (which is the first thing that they recommend you do upon unpackaging your headset). The cord is short, just under 10" long (without the connectors). It's easy to change the ear plugs in and out so that you can try different sizes. You just press in and turn to the left. To insert one, you press in and turn to the right. (All of this is in the instruction book.) I found that I could use the small or the medium. I'm a 5'7" woman who weighs more than she should but you wouldn't hate sitting next to me on a plane. The ear plug sits loosely just inside your ear. You may not even feel it. It's definitely not a snug fit and you will hear surrounding sounds in both ears. What keeps the headset in place is the rest of it, not the ear plug. The boom mic is adjustable. I found it was directly pointed toward my mouth in it's lowest position. The device has a call button on the round part, from which the boom extends. That's for taking and ending calls if you don't want to use voice commands, which also work. On the underside of the boom is another button that mutes calls among other things. There is a volume rocker on the upper back part of the largest part of the device -- the part that goes behind the ear. And below that is the on/off switch. At the bottom of the back is the charging connector -- just a bit of recessed coppery looking metal. It reads "Plantronics" in very subtle small pale gray lettering at the bottom of the largest part of the device, on both sides. You can see where it is in the small shiny black part at the bottom of the picture. If you have the right expectations (it's not a magic genie... It may only last for two years... A very few of them will be defective and will require replacement...), you will be delighted with your purchase. You will not find better sound quality anywhere else. If you are used to music headphones, the looser, more open feel of the headset in your ear (or barely touching the front of your ear), might take some adjustment. I highly recommend this product and am confident that, if after reading this review you still want it, you will not be disappointed. UPDATE: One feature I have come to really appreciate is the voice commands. Some parts of my house get spotty cell phone reception. So, when I'm wearing the headset (during work hours), I always leave my phone in a "good reception area" of the house. If a call comes in, I don't have to rush back to the headset to pick it up, I just say, "answer" and the headset picks up the call. If the caller is in my address book, the phone will announce who's calling. If I'm silent or say "decline," the call is not picked up.
Review: Best headsets I've found, but ... - Update (2023-07-02): I'm leaving my previous review intact below and adding a few thoughts. Most of it still applies to some extent. But ... this is the best headset I've ever had for my purpose, and I still can't find anything better. I don't talk on the phone any other way. Better? Noise cancellation and sound quality has been good on most of the 11 I've owned (yes, 11). I think some were counterfeits. Everyone can understand me on the other end, and many I've talked to had no clue I was going down the road (even with the windows down). The last one I bought was in December of 2022. I have two that still work fine. I don't know if the most recent failure is one of the more recent purchases, or a very old one. It literally wore out. The last two that failed lost their skins. I bought my first one in April of 2016. I only have one reason for not upgrading to the 5200. I despise micro-USB. I love the magnet connector for these. I can just reach up and pull it off the charge cable and put it on my ear while driving with minimal distraction. I carry two on the truck within reach so that when one battery gets low the other is right there. I can even snap the charger on the headset without having to see it. Try that with micro-USB. So, if you have time and patience to fiddle with micro-USB, by all means get the 5200. It's a better headset in every way, except for that. Poly seems to have migrated this headset over much better than they had at the beginning of 2023. There's a new app, and it works. I haven't tried to update the headset online with a PC since the end of 2022. If Poly would update this headset's internals, and leave the size, shape, and charger intact, I'd pay more for that one than another one of these. If I knew that they had, I'd be buying one from their website. There are numerous SKUs of this headset. There's no way for us mere mortals to know what the differences are, if any. I suspect that one or two of the FFP models were counterfeit, but I'm going to gamble again. The warranty will be out long before any problems become apparent. Then I'll buy another one ... or the Voyager Legend 2024. I am buying another one so I'll have two spares. Only 2 of the 11 are left. I started keeping one at home too. My wife is still using a 5200, but she has a couple of these ... somewhere. Previously (circa January 2023): I think I've purchased my last Legend, even though I haven't tested it yet. It's time to find something better, and that's going to be hard. My ear fits these too well. Be aware that this headset appears to no longer be fully supported online. Plantronics is now Poly. I just downloaded the latest version of Plantronics Hub from Poly's support site, which appears to be the remnants of Plantronics support site. When I run the Plantronics Hub and try to update the headset I get, "Plantronics Hub is unable to connect to the server." I suspect that the update server no longer exists, though I can't be sure. The most recent firmware version is v.109, and may be the last one. That doesn't take away from the quality and usefulness of the headset at all. It's still the best noise-cancelling headset I can comfortably wear. Driving a truck I wear one all the time. Having said all that, I have had issues with some of the ones I've purchased more recently, and my wife has too. Some of them don't cancel noise as well as others, though they all come up as the same product, and the same firmware version. Early on, they were all flawless. Lately, they're not. We've had a couple that failed before we managed to destroy them ourselves. And it's possible that more modern devices don't connect as well to the older version of bluetooth these support. This is a very good legacy product. Last note: My wife has one of the newer 5200s, and didn't like it nearly as well as these.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is frustration free packaging?**
A: Be careful purchasing this product without the original packaging - there are many, many online sellers who resell these units - they are subject to failure over a period of time.

I think the V Legend is amazing - but after owning 5 of the over the years and having every single one fail after a year or so I'm moving to the 5200 hopefully with better results. For $100 a pop these really should have a longer lifespan. The only reason I keep buying them is because they really are the best phone headset/mic out there nothing else really compares.

Again my advice is to only buy in new factory packaging, the high failure rate on this model means there are duds out there that people are reselling as "new" - I've fallen for the ruse myself when trying to find a cost effective way to replace the unit.

**Q: The magnetic charger - Will it also be able to be charged by a regular micro USB charger ?**
A: You need a special mating connector to charge the Voyager Legend, and cannot use a generic micro USB connector cable by itself.

The Voyager Legend headset itself has 5 exposed, gold-plated electrical contacts, which are designed to mate with a set of 5 charging pins nestled in a cupped concave surface (which complements the convex part of the Legend). These contacts transmit normal electricity, not anything magnetic. Note that this charging approach is a direct DC charging approach, and is different than the AC magnetic field charging approach used by other appliances like electric toothbrushes or the Qi cell phone charging standard.

That said, there are magnets used to attaching the charging connector to the headset.

Mating pins providing electricity to charge the headset may be found either:
1. at the end of a USB charging cable "Voyager Legend 9" USB Charging Cable". The USB end of this cable is a male USB type A. The proprietary cable end has a magnet inside, which is only pulls in and seats the Voyager Legend headset exposed electrical contacts against the proprietary cable contacts.

-or-

2. Within the "Voyager Legend Portable Charge Case" (part number 89036-1). This case accepts a standard micro USB cable for power, which it uses to both charge its internal battery, and then routes this power to the pin contacts within the case. There is also a very strong magnet within this case to tightly pull the headset into the pins and seat it properly.

There may be other products out there I'm not aware of that provide the mating connector, including aftermarket products.

I have to say that I really like the proprietary charging contact approach. I keep my Voyager Legend on a shelf with a USB power supply, and it's extremely easy to just casually place the headset near to the USB cable, and the magnet does the rest of the job by pulling the headset in and seating it perfectly. I've had the same Legend since I bought it new in 2013 (it's 2021 as I write this), and mostly it's been a very reliable headset with good battery life. I also appreciate that the battery life has not degraded significantly in the 8 years I've had it. Probably Plantronics was careful about the sources for their OEM batteries, resulting in a very long-lived battery within the headset itself. I've found that other cheap Bluetooth headsets I have tend to lose that battery life after 2-3 years.

**Q: is your voice clear to caller?**
A: Nobody can hear me when I use this. Everybody's complaint is that my voice comes across very quiet and far away even though the mic is an inch away from my mouth. It is completely inadequate at its main function. I might have received a lemon, I don't know, but out of the box people started complaining.

**Q: Can you mute your voice with this product? If yes, then how is it done?**
A: YES...the boom is flat on the bottom side when it's on your ear. There's a straight button that's maybe a quarter inch long. Press that button & you will hear "mute on". Press again you'll hear "mute off". I think it is set to remind you every 15 minutes; but if you go to the plantronics website, you have the capability of changing that. I have mine set for 5 minutes. I seldom use the mute but it does come in handy every now & then!!!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Best Headset Available on the Market but Have the Right Expectations
*by T***R on November 18, 2014*

This headset is not perfectly perfect in every way but it is the best that you can buy. Or buy it from Amazon where they will keep a record for you.) I just bought my second one - the first lasted about 4 years for me with light use.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Overall happy with purchase
*by E***N on June 1, 2014*

I purchased a cheaper plantronics bluetooth headset locally and was very disappointed with the sound quality. I decided to try this one, and I'm glad I did. The different charger is not a huge deal for me, though I do plan to get the hard case soon (as it doesn't come with any kind of case) and the hard case uses a micro USB charger like the rest of my electronics. Good things: I was really skeptical about the sensor working well to change between the headset and the phone during phone calls. It has surprised me in a good way. It changes almost flawlessly. (The almost is that I grabbed the headset with my fingers in a certain spot and it thought it was on my ear so transferred back. But I let go and it went right back to my phone.) I even turned the bluetooth on from my phone and turned the headset on in the middle of a call (was off when I received the call) and the call transferred to the headset without a problem when I put it on. The sound quality is really good. I wouldn't say awesome, but I have no real problems with it. The voice commands work really well. I do speak a bit louder, but I'm not sure that I have to? The other headset I tried I had to practically scream at. This one I don't have to. Even with background noise and wind about 20 mph this headset performs well. Others can hear me just fine. I haven't tried it on one of our 60mph wind days, but I'm not sure anything could drown that out! Not so good things: The headset size for the over-the-ear part is not adjustable, so if you have smaller ears it will not fit as well. This causes the headset to rest mostly on the part that goes into my ear. It doesn't fit so well. However, it usually stays on so it is something I'm willing to live with. I have thought to try to fill in the upper part of the gap, but I'm not sure if that would throw off the sensors. This headset is not so comfortable with glasses. I do wear contacts, but since I bought this to use mainly while driving, sunglasses do present a challenge. It does still work, but is a bit more to maneuver. The volume is a little off, or at least just to me. The volume for calls is loud for me. I can't seem to get it to go low enough. However when I go to use the voice dialing or listen to the headset info (such as battery) the volume is really low on that. So the phone calls are much louder than the headset's own audio. This is great if you are in a noisy environment and have to hear the call, but not so great when you want to lessen the strain on your ear in a quiet area. Overall I'm very happy with this headset and would purchase again. It does what I need it to do, and the battery does seem to last. I'm not sure it lasts the advertised 7 hours, but it does last a long time. I haven't timed it.
