Q: Can I use this in tap water for appliances requiring distilled water?

No - this product has some pretty harsh chemicals - nothing in common with distilled water.

Q: does this water treatment help with hard tap water?

I haven't found anything that helps with hard water in humidifiers but this seems to slow down the calcification on the filters.

Q: Does this treatment eliminate the white dust that covers the furniture around the humidifier?

If you are using an ultrasonic type humidifier, you will get the dust that you are getting. I switched to an evaporative type unit and the dust went away. I prefer the newer unit. Good luck
