Pro-Ject DAC Box S FL (Silver) Digital to Analog Converter, Silver

This simple DAC replaced a Schiit Gungnir DAC in my 2 channel CD player--DAC--Amp--Speakers Hi-Fi system.The Gungnir is a really good piece of Hi-Fi gear, but the Pro-Ject Box S FL transforms my hi-Fi system to a level that is truly remarkable.As i am writing this short review, I am listening to Richard Thompson's "Thirteen Rivers" CD.It literally sounds like Richard Thompson is playing and singing in our entertainment room!!I have rarely experienced this type of realism, and certainly never in my own home, but now I can experience LIFELIKE and LIFE SIZE images almost any and every time I put a CD in the Harman Kardon 990 CD player that feeds the Project Bos S.My speakers are Audio Nirvana "5.6" speakers with 15" full range drivers. These speakers are very detailed, and can be driven with very few watts (99 db efficiency) BUT the 5.6's have never sounded this good!!I feel that there is an incredible synergy between these components--all chosen for their simplicity---A single volume control knob for the Emotiva BASX-100 amp. Only an ON button for the Project DAC. A single range 15" driver for the Audio Nirvana speakers. No tone or balance controls/No crossovers/No equalization.BUT the system was upgraded in a huge way with the Project DAC--a DAC with no filters.Bottom line: BUY THIS! At $235 it is an upgrade that could be worth thousands!

This DAC is my first foray into filterless, NOS digital. I'm extremely pleased with its performance. Reviews elsewhere on the web are mixed. Darko gives this DAC a very low rating. Pay it no mind. The guy needs to clean the wax out of his ears. This DAC is the most analog-like I've encountered yet. It does lack the uppermost "air" of some more modern designs, but that's a small sacrifice for all its strengths. Soundstage is wide and deep. The tones are colorful and timbre has great texture. Musicality is off the charts! I wouldn't be at all surprised if this little box competes with the uber $$$, multi-bit DACs in oversized, blinged-out cases.This DAC is digital music at its simplest and best. I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase. I find myself analyzing the SQ much less since this box has entered the chain.And just to affirm I'm not just some raving fanboy. I've tried other Pro-Ject gear that was downright terrible. This DAC however, gets my highest recommendation.

Amazing sound from this dac. It does sound very tube like, analog, just as product described. Very happy with purchase. Music sounds so good, i hear notes i never heard before from my CDs.

I stored my Chord Mojo DAC in the cupboard after a few days of comparison. It is interesting how this simple 16bit design is better at not just CD quality audio but even the 24bit 192khz studio masters. Vocies and strings are just amazing! So organic.

Very airy, sweet sounding. I feel vocals are cleaner sounding and is more prominent if you're into that kind of thing. Paired with Single Ended Mosfet Amp.
