An ideal introduction to playing slide guitar.
At 72 years old and having played guitar for 58 years I decided that it was time that I learned to play slide guitar and, after searching through Amazon and reading the reviews I decided to give this book a try. It turned out to be a good choice. This book takes you, step by step, through the basic open tunings and, using simple exercises initially then later more complex ones, helps you to learn and develop slide guitar technique. The free downloadable audio files which accompany each exercise are invaluable too. Each exercise is written in tab and musical score with slide and tremolo motions clearly annotated. All in all I am very pleased with my choice of this book to the extent that I have already purchased the follow up edition 'Slide Guitar Soloing Technique' by the same author.

Sharp learning curve !
I bought this book after I damaged my left (fretting) hand which meant it would be out of action for a few weeks. So I thought I'd try to learn some slide guitar. My slow progress means that the material in this book will last me a very long time ! My main observation so far is that there is a steep jump in the learning process in chapter 2 (specifically between Example 2J and the very next Example 2K). Example 2K also introduces two new techniques which have no explanation in the text and you need to listen carefully to the audio to figure out how to play them (in my case I still have not mastered this !). However I really hope I will be able to progress further but I guess I would have preferred something with a gentler start (for a not very good guitar player !). My 3 star rating is essentially non-committal. The material in the book looks good, I just hope I'll have the ability to access it. I'll update this review in the happy event of my progressing further !Update (1). I guess that Example 2K may be an aberration. The techniques referred to are explained later. I decided to just skip over that Example and the following Examples and chapters follow a much gentler path - which I am enjoying. So - have upgraded to 4 star.

Recommended for Slide newbies
Lots of books out there that don't hit the spot or tell you really want you want to know. Not this one though.Recommended for slide newbies and great fun to follow which makes it easy to work thru. Covers both Open G and D, scales, tips and tricks, scales it's all in there. This is a fantastic place to start.

Keeps your Interest
At last a book that gives me the desire to play slide guitar, always wanted to play Delta Blues but nothing really gave me the incentive to Persie. This book breaks it down bit by bit and helps you get those sounds almost straight away, its not easy but this explains so much and audio to help you get it right. Not going to be the last book I get from these guys!

Enjoyable, informative and well structured
This is an excellent guide. I have been playing guitar for fifty years and have amassed a large number of guitar tutors ( classical, jazz, ragtime, blues etc ). This is one of the best. Mr Clay knows how to teach, how to structure a course. And with the ( essential ) audio back up, I found the whole experience most enjoyable and informative. My Micheal Messer guitar has never sounded so good ! I like the way we are encouraged to develop the ideas in the book to our own ends - even if we are are not pure delta blues fans.

A great book for the slide guitarist
I bought this for my husband who loves slide guitar and has tinkered with slide for years. He was delighted to receive it and says that it's well structured and the language is very clear. He loves the MP3 downloads but says that it could have been priced on a cd or similar as even in these modern times not everyone has a computer or internet access however the downloads are good quality and he will make great use of them. All in all this book is a great success and a great addition to any guitarists library.
