The Robots Are Coming!: The Future of Jobs in the Age of Automation
T**Y
The robots are here to stay.
The robots are indeed coming. In fact, they're already here. Not just the R2D2 robots of Star Wars fame, but Artificial Intelligence (AI) in general, of which mechanical robots are just one facet. Most AI is digital. It's taking jobs from such diverse professions and occupations as teachers, bankers, lawyers, doctors, service industry employees, factory workers. Sure, the "robots" mechanical and digital, are making industries and professions more efficient, able to generate more and cheaper goods and services, but at what cost? The author points out that sweeping technological advances since the Industrial Revolution have always created more jobs than they displaced, and elevated the standard of living to boot. But he questions whether that unbroken trend will continue, fearing that more jobs will be lost than will be created. I frankly think the author is too pessimistic about this. Some of the employments the author believes will result in a net gain of jobs are: health care assistants, digital security guards, alternate energy specialists, product designers, robot programers and maintenance workers, data analysts. What to do about the robot revolution usurping jobs? The author discusses such possible solutions as taxing mechanical robots the same way human workers are taxed. And providing a basic income to workers displaced by AI. And training displaced workers to perform different jobs from the ones they are ousted from. Like the Las Vegas casinos agreeing to retain and retrain their employees who lose their current jobs to robots.Lots to wrap your head around and to get up to speed on this important topic,

Demistifying the myths surrounding automization, a fantastic read.
The author eloquently displays the techno-optimists and pessimists with facts to help demystify the murky waters of misinformation surrounding the future of automization and the issues surrounding it. Technological unemployment and the potential for human labor to be increasingly replaced by more efficient and cost effectice practices, but it is not all doom and gloom.
