Heavenly Vegan Dals & Curries: Exciting New Dishes From an Indian Girl's Kitchen Abroad

Great idea, but the recipes haven’t been developed and tested.
We buy cookbooks today, as opposed to using free recipes online, because we believe each recipe has been tested and revised until perfect—with very few mistakes, typos, missing elements, etc. Well this is certainly a beautifully photographed book. Each recipe seems fascinating and inviting. But then I actually made a few of them, and it appears some of the recipes may not have been tested at all. I mean AT. ALL. For example, I made the recipe for the Indian felafels with spicy avocado chutney. Boy it looks fantastic! But that recipe for naaan clearly wasn’t ever tested, the ratios are waaay off. You cannot make any dough with those proportions of flour and water. And naan bread is SOFT due to the use of eggs, milk and/or yogurt. You can’t just leave them out, you must spend time developing alternatives. That’s why we pay for an edited book. And it wasn’t just the impossible naan, unfortunately. I ended up having to alter each of the four recipes to get pourable sauces and tasty felafels. And I guess I expected a wider variety of curries, honestly. This book covers a very narrow range of Indian flavors, with little investigation of the larger, wider amazing world of curries across Asia. It’s a beautiful book, so i’m really disappointed more time wasn’t spent on the recipes themselves. I give it two stars for creativity.

Great flavors, healthy eating
I've made about 8 recipes (some more than once); all were deep in flavor and basically used healthy ingredients. I cook Indian and Asian dishes anyway, so I have the ingredients on hand. Beautiful photos of completed dishes, but you don't have to compare--make it your own ;-)Couple snafus like when the recipe asks you to cook 1 cup of beans in 1/4 water for 40 mins-- you gotta know that's gonna be a problem in about 5 mins. I bought it out of the blue on Amazon while looking for another cookbook, glad I did!

Book is appropriately titled
As a librarian, I have the luxury of checking out books before I commit to buying them. I brought the book home and my husband immediately leafed through the pages and became inspired to make the Raw Turmeric & Cauliflower Curry dish. I assisted him with the preparations and couldn’t wait to dive in for the taste. We loved the dish! I knew this was a cookbook we needed to have as part of our repertoire at home. I bought the book right away! I made the Ginger Turmeric Chickpeas with Roasted Cherry Tomatoes dish since and we loved that too. After a busy day of work, that second dish was handy, quick, nutritious and delicious. I’m eager to try every recipe! Highly recommended.

Delicious!
The recipes in this book are very flavorful and easy to follow. The spicing tastes complex but not overly complicated. If you like Indian food and want some a little different I highly recommend this book.
