Is this just for florida? would it work in columbia sc where winter is punctuated with one or two days of 20f or lower several times in a season?

Just in case people don’t catch on to that joking answer another person left, these will work to keep pipes from freezing almost anywhere. By releasing a steady water flow when temperatures drop to cold the water will warm the pipes and then it will shut itself off. It really cold climates you’re likely to have some ice buildup beside the Fossett but at least your pipes will not freeze and break. That intern would cause much more water loss, and expensive damage. If you live in a very cold climate, these are a really good idea. You might not need them if you live anymore tropical climate. But they will work anyway

Is there a trick to get this to screw on? The O ring is so think I can not get it to connect.

Gee, Jeannette, I'm not sure. The thing is designed to screw onto your outside faucet just like your garden hose does. And just like your hose, it has a washer inside it. You'll notice that the Freeze Miser's washer (or O-ring) is thicker and harder than the one in your hose and possibly, it just isn't seated properly in the connector. Try pushing the black washer deeper into the connector, maybe with a screwdriver (being careful not to score or cut the washer). If you can get the washer down below the connector's screw threads, you then can just put it on your faucet and screw it down really hard until it stops. That should move the washer down too.

Does the warranty cover the pipe repair where this is installed if that pipe freezes and breaks?

No— that is our responsibility. After all, the pipe could break in another place and that’s not the responsibility of the the seller of this item. I will say ours has worked perfectly this winter so we’re very happy with it.

On a hydrant that is 200 ft away from a stock tank should a person put one at the hydrant and the tank with the float?

There are varying factors, I do not know your set up. If your hose or pipe is off the ground or any part is on the ground and in the air you will have varying temperatures, within the pipe or hose. If you have it off the ground and not insulated you should be fine at the float. I do not know all your variables as well as how cold the temperature is. So without more detail I would put it on both.
