Q: How does it detach and reattach? Is it sturdy enough for combat when attached?

It screws in place. The attachment is quite strong, but it would depend on what you mean by combat. If it is intended for child use, it should be more than acceptable. I would not expect it to last for anything of SCA grade combat. We used it for a play at church, and did some goofing off and rough housing with it, and the only thing that really broke was the bottom cap of the foam. Basically, I would expect it to hold up to use except for full-strength adult strikes.

No, it the spear head is just a solid foam piece that is glued in place.

It's about an inch thick and comes in 2 sections (screw together in the center) it's lightly padded, and easy to grip.
