How do you know what paints you require before purchasing?

I have a large selection of airfix paints but for the body color I just looked on Ebay and brought an car spray paint Hycote Double Acrylic For Ford Graphite Grey Metallic Spray Paint 150ml looks the same as color on box

Do you have use the photoetched parts or are they optional? I'm always scared of them as it's not easy to glue metal parts.
