Q: Is it food safe? Would it be safe to make a bowl for example

I am not 100% sure it does not have toxins in it, I know it is toxic before it is baked I would not chance it.

Q: Can you paint it after cooking

Yes. I use acrylic paint all the time on all my creations. Once dry it is waterproof too.

Q: Can pieces of the clay be joined securely together when modelling and how is this done?

I model a section of my design then harden it in the oven. Then further sections are added and the whole item is hardened back in the oven. Heating fuses all the parts together to become one. First baking can be just enough to prevent distortion while adding further sections.
