I was going to buy this toy based on the positive reviews, then noticed that over 75% of the reviews were posted in the last 3 days. Doesn't this appear suspicious to Amazon?

I purchased the product based on the good reviews and also because it was significantly cheaper than the one on toys r us. My 4 year old loves it so much that I bought 2 more!! He builds awesome stuff with it.. Pretty cool toy!

Are they compatible with magna tiles?

no. they are different size shapes than magna tiles. so they can't be used with them.
