Shitake mushrooms add great flavor!!!
Adds great flavor to soups, veggies etc., just soak 20-30 minutes in warm water sand use whole or sliced. Don't waste the soaking water, just add it to the pan.

These are a Super Value! Certified Organic from a USA based company, High quality, love them!
These are fabulous! D'Allesandro is legit!I read over so many different listings for Shiitake online and I decided I really wanted Organic to help ensure some level of quality that I could not otherwise discern. There were many reviews on this listing talking about various negative problems that almost scared me off. In the end, this was the best price per ounce/pound for organic...this was less than 2 bucks per ounce versus 5 or 6 per ounce for 1 ounce packages available here. I had to give it a try. When it arrived, I was so glad. here are initial highlights:- Certified Organic! yes, there is a standard label on the box from a USA based company and certified Organic right on the label.- 2 day shipping - this did not have prime shipping, but just took a couple days to arrive from the seller. This is not coming out of China, this is from a US based company.- D'Allesandro is a real company. I had to look them up before I ordered. If you order these, make sure you get it from them and not some random seller. Their name is on the label, they sell tons of food prep stuff- Quality looks great, there were no broken pieces. I took them out of the blue bulk bag they came in and put into smaller containers for storage and after I got them all out of the bag, there was just some mushroom dust in the bag, not a pile of chunks and pieces...so great quality. Size was mostly in the 1-2 inch cap size with some in the 3 inch range, too.I use shiitake for making mushroom powder for my sauces, so I threw a few ounces into my blender and made a batch of powder. I've made a stir-fry dinner with this and it's great. I cannot comment on re-hydrating, as I don't do it.I want to assure everyone, these are superb. Just make sure they are from D'Allesandro as I know these Amazon listing sometimes gets mixed sources over time. I'll be back for more once I get through this pound.

Good organic mushrooms
I give this 4 stars not 5 because I feel it is not quite as pictured. Premium mushrooms have thick caps with white cracks on top. Premium comes with a price though. A pound of organic premium mushrooms would easily cost over $100. I do not see any white cracks on my mushrooms. Although they are not thick caps, they are still of very good quality for organic mushrooms at this price point. I rehydrate overnight then enjoy the mushrooms, all of which are whole not broken into pieces. For those concerned that they come in a plain bag, the sealed box is labeled. Much of my bulk supplies, like teas for example, arrive labeled this way. They are delicious. You will not be disappointed!

Five Stars
Wonderful mushrooms, nice quality. I have enjoyed rehydrating them and using in lots of soups and stews.

Shitage mushroom from questionable sources
It was supposed to be organic mushroom....First of all, the package came from someone who live in a condo or apartment in Bangkok, Thailand from the mailing package. The package arrived at my home after 6-7 weeks after I placed an order in Amazon.Inside the package, there was a plain vinyl bag (one like ziploc) that contained mushrooms. There was no information about which company or which stores these mushrooms came from. For all I care, someone in Bangkok got some mushrooms, put them in a vinyl bag and shipped it. I have no idea where these mushrooms came from.I debated whether I should eat them or not. I am returning it, although I am not sure it is possible. If Amazon does not honor it, I am throwing them away into thrash. I don't take a chance with food.

acceptable: you get what you pay for
"1 pound" package contained 1 lb 3/8 oz. by my [non commercial] kitchen scale. Good value by weight. Very little to no breakage -- implies good care in prep. Cap substance is reasonable, but not as thick as 'high class' grades.Judging by fragrance, the quality is OK. I'm too lazy to wait to revue them after cooking. They smell fine and I assume will taste OK.Average size of the mushrooms is about 3/4-1 inch diameter -- smaller than what I am used to. This creates a rather high stem to cap ratio. I use Shitake for flavoring in Asian cooking, so presentation is somewhat less important to me than it might be to others, but I consider stems unchewable, and use them to make flavoring powder after breaking them off. This lowers the value of the overall package, since the small mushroom size will entail a lot more stem removal per recipe use.I will not reorder this item again, but do not feel cheated. It was the cheapest source of Shitake on Amazon, and I guess is priced appropriately. Next time I will return to my previous supplier for better mushrooms at a higher price. These will last me quite a while. Three stars means "OK" which is what these are to me.BTW -- in "merchant feedback" the word shitake is rejected as 'unacceptable' by the word police robot. Should I have said "Lentinus edodes"?UPDATE: the flavor of the rehydrated mushrooms and their broth is good, although not the best I have had in terms of complexity or intensity. The quality of the flavor is a bit better than the quality of the appearance of the dried mushrooms. Next time I'd probably spend more for a better grade, but this is decent value for money, from my pov.

Organic is Better than Non-organic
UPDATE: I now no longer see on the page that it is organic. I will now buy:Woodstock Farms Organic Shiitake Mushrooms, and it is at a lower cost.I think these organic shiitake mushrooms have a better taste and texture than the non-organic shiitake from the same seller; they are smaller if that matters; and the cost is low for mushrooms in general, and it's organic.
