It’s fine
The book was definitely used. The front is a little bent up, but that’s fine. All of the pages appear to be intact.

She suffers from a mental illness and tells us what a mental hospital is like through the eyes of a patient
Susanna Kaysen, the main character and author of Girl, Interrupted, starts out as an 18 year old being entered into a mental hospital in an attempt to commit suicide. She tells her story in vignettes, as if we are taking a tour of certain parts of her memory. She suffers from a mental illness and tells us what a mental hospital is like through the eyes of a patient. Kaysen was really just trying to heal and quickly recover during her time in the hospital. It was almost a relief for her to be put where she is so she could potentially heal. Susanna explains to the reader, “I did need a rest....he opened the back door of the taxi and pushed me in. I let my head fall back against the seat and shut my eyes”(8,9). This quote demonstrates that Susanna didn’t really mind being forced to go, she went with it and didn’t fight the fact that a doctor was sending her away because he thinks she is mentally challenged. Clearly, she took this as a stress reliever because she rest her head back and began to relax once she got in the taxi. Once at the hospital, she met a girl named Lisa. Lisa has a wild personality. She has very rambunctious moments and acts as an entertainer and role model to the other girls. Her wild card behavior makes her do some crazy things, for example, she has tried making multiple escapes and does the most random stuff to keep herself busy. She threw a whole fit because she wanted the nurse to open her locked window and wouldn’t quiet down until she got her way. People wondered why she mad such a scene when it was only a window. “‘Hey man,’ said Lisa, ‘it passes the time’”(82). Being locked up in a mental hospital doesn’t exactly give you freedom. You become isolated and find ways to keep yourself busy and entertained. The main conflict is internal. Susanna is having a conflict with herself. She is trying to heal but it becomes difficult when the world around her is changing and she is confined in a hospital. She can’t be expected to heal when she is surrounded by other crazy people. As a result, it takes her some time to accept what she calls her life, and finally takes the time to recover.I personally enjoyed the book. I love how the author would describe things from her point of view and give us an insight on what it is like to live with, technically speaking, crazy people for two years. For example, the way she described Lisa when she would have her little wild moments was always fun to read. Also, when she is explaining how she was entered into the hospital I was intrigued by how she described exactly what was happening. In addition, it was very interesting when she was giving us visuals on how her fellow roomates looked like the girl who had set herself on fire. I would recommend this book but only to people who don’t mind bouncing all over the place and keeping track of what is going on. Otherwise, I advise you to read it.
