Just as BIASED as OLD history books, just a different BIAS
Many teenagers today are smart enough to know when they're being lied to. When they experience that, they lose faith in their educational system, and even worse, lose interest in learning . This book risks that effect. At least my teenager is learning a lot about propaganda, bias, opinion and conjecture. He can pick out the lies and bias in a heartbeat. And while there are some basic facts, he has to research extensively to find the information he is really interested in.For example the French Revolution was presented as the honorable, age old triumph of the downtrodden over their oppressors. However, the truth of the French Revolution was not that simple and certainly wasn't honorable. The massive oppression of the lower class by the monarchy and the church, the barbarism and heinous violence of the revolutionaries, the genocide of anti-revolutionaries and christians during the "Reign of Terror", the anarchy and eventual dictatorship, is an amazing opportunity to teach our students the extreme complexity of the human condition. Just one of the many opportunities for learning that was presented very simplistically, because ignoring the complexity of the event was a better fit for the biased narrative of the writers.
