The English Bible, King James Version: The New Testament and The Apocrypha: A Norton Critical Edition (Norton Critical Editions) Paperback – Illustrated, May 24, 2012

This volume is a fantastic opportunity to gain better insights into the New Testament. I am a believer, but also a skeptic. This edition of the KJV feeds both sides of me simultaneously. Who really wrote the various pieces that came to be what we know as the New Testament and Apocrypha? This volume goes into that question. What does the best research say about translation of various words and phrases in these texts? This volume covers those things as well. What are the influences and the influenced things for these texts? Check again. Where should I look for further information if this doesn't give me all that I need? You guessed it. Here again. I am a literary studies professor, and, as usual, W.W. Norton & Co. have knocked it out of the park here. However I am also a Christian. I'm the kind of Christian that doesn't like to be bullied into believing certain dogmas or creeds. This volume has helped deepen my faith, as well as question myself and my beliefs at the same time, giving me a perfect balance. I'm not saying this volume is for everyone, but I will say that I wish more people had access to, and used a volume like this for their personal and professional use.

The commentary is newer than most Bible translations and not aligned to any one Christian dogma. The views present tidbits of information without exegesis. The hagiography is kept to a minimum for a Bible. I appreciate the work for educational purposes. You can find out a lot more from specialized researchers but most of them have a viewpoint to present. This product avoids that to some extent. I am used to verses encapsulated in commentary. This book has references that jump to later pages. Thus it takes a while to figure out how to find your way through the book. (HTML jumps) The price is very reasonable for such a resource. I would recommend the work for interested lay people.

This edition of the New Testament and Apocrypha Writings is not a search for spiritual truth, but a search for literary truth.It's an analysis of this Holy Writings that could be a good knowledge for one who is hoping to understand the secular world around their Christian Faith by understanding how the Secular World understand our Sacred Scriptures first.Well done.Thanks.

This edition of the Bible is for people who want to confront the Bible as a text that has formed Western culture for 19 centuries or so. The authors present scholarly but quite readable notes and introductions to each book, and the background and secondary materials in the back are very useful. Other commenters have quibbled with the choice of translation (King James). For all its faults, the KJV is the one that's done most of the heavy lifting thus far, and at least in my opinion, the translation is unsurpassed in its beauty. It's also the one that supplies so many of the phrases still in use today (like "give up the ghost" for dying) And when I say "all its faults," most of those are minor and the notes address them.One last thing. This book is big. It's not easy to read on the couch. However, it is quite well bound -- I am very hard on books and this one has taken a great deal of abuse from me by way of being folded over, dropped, marked-up, spilled-on, left on the floor, and dog-eared. The printing is high quality, and the paper is bright and relatively thick. The binding is sewn and tough. Also, the editors have used paragraphing and the print is not in columns -- it goes across the page but with wide margins and is easier on the eye than I at first predicted it would be.I couldn't be more pleased with this edition.

This was such a pleasant surprise. I knew about the volume from the description page but it was ten times more than I expected. The articles in the back are just wonderful. This book will get much use both for the Bible parts and for all the well researched information in the back. Great buy and quality in every way.

This was in good condition and I am enjoying studying all the notes and extra features that you don't find in other bibles. I am very pleased with this purchase.
