Another winner from Softspun
Some other review here said this is not 400 gsm because it's too thin. Well, they're wrong. GSM and towel thickness are not always related; you can have a thin but dense 400 gsm drying towel like this one and also a light and fluffy 400 gsm polishing towel. Moving on..Softspun is one of the best Indian microfibre brands and I say that as a microfibre and detailing addict that knows the differences between good and bad microfibre and has in his collection many microfibre brands, both Indian and foreign. When you buy Softspun, you buy a good product; there's no doubting or second guessing yourself.Other great Indian brands are Posh and Poshlyf. Those two brands are slightly better quality than Softspun but also more expensive. You also have Maxoshine which is equal with Softspun and then Sobby which I would rank just below. Softspun is the sweet spot of price and quality among all those options. I will leave out other good brands such as ShineXPro and Wavex because of their limited and overpriced range of products; I can't recommend them while we have all those other superb options I mentioned.About this drying towel, I've been using it more than a year and have been very satisfied. I use other thick plush drying towels too and while they're also very good, I keep coming back to these waffle weave style drying towels. They shine in their ability to wipe glass and windows dry without streaking. They're also lighter and easier to hold/use than the thick plush towels. These Softspun towels will not absorb all the water in one pass on a very wet car and you might need a second pass; or you can wipe slower to give the towel time to absorb. But that's really ok because only the highest quality expensive towels will dry in one pass. I have a brand new one to compare my regularly used towel with; and I'd say the used one still has 75% of the original softness and absorbency even after a year of heavy use and many machine washes.I like this Softspun towel just as I like the imported Meguiar's Water Magnet towel which sells for Rs. 800/- on Amazon. I bought the Meguiar's just to compare it with the Softspun and was surprised to find that the used tired Softspun felt more solid than and worked as well as the fresh new Meguiar's towel. But regardless of brand; I love these waffle weave style drying towels and plan to buy and try some from the other brands on Amazon too. This is strictly a drying towel for a washed wet clean car; do not use it to wipe/wash dirty paint; it is too thin for that purpose, will scratch the paint and it'll be your fault. For washing, you need to buy a chenille microfiber wash mitt (the Amazonbasics wash mitt is a superstar and Softspun makes a great one too) or a thick plush towel (400 to 800 gsm is great) with long fibres which can hold the dirt away from the paint. Always buy microfibre in light and bright colours; helps you see when it's getting dirty and needs a rinse or when tiny rocks/debris get stuck within the fibres; use the darker colours for wheels/tyres/other dirty areas.I bought the large 60x80cm size and one towel will easily dry a Toyota Innova or other full size cars. It is also slightly larger than the Meguiar's towel I mentioned earlier so that was a pleasant surprise too. Here are my tips to get the best results from this towel and also to take care of all your microfibre products and keep them in good condition:1) Always wash new microfiber products before using them for the first time. No detergent; only water; there is usually lint/dye/residue left over from the manufacturing process and you'll see how much the water changes colour.2) Even for a drying towel, it's always good to start with the towel slightly damp and not fully dry. Microfibre just works better that way. The only times you would use a dry microfibre towel is to apply or remove wax/compound/polish/sealants or if you're already using a drying aid such as spray wax to lubricate the paint surface while you dry the car. If not using any lubrication/spray wax while drying, then definitely dampen the towel. The reason is that dry fibres have a higher chance of causing scratches than damp soft fibres. Most of the micro scratches on paint happen during the washing and drying process. You can dip the drying towel into clean water and then twist as dry as possible and then start drying with it. Or if that sounds too wet, then spray/mist both the towel and the car with water/spray wax/your waterless wash solution. The aim is to minimise scratching while drying.3) Never rub the towel hard on the paint. Fold the towel twice or thrice to make a nice thick pad. Then gently wipe the car in one direction in straight lines and never in circles. Do not use any pressure. Lightly guide the towel under your palm and let the weight of the towel do the work. Keep switching to a fresh side of the towel as it gets wetter.4) These towels are very easy to clean. If used only for drying washed cars, you can just hang to dry or hand rinse them or quickly machine wash with only water. Use detergent only for dirty/stained microfibre. Use only liquid detergent (any laundry detergent without added fabric softener is fine but I will still recommend the Wavex microfibre liquid detergent; a very good Indian product; well priced and cost effective; the 1 litre bottle will last you a long time). Never use powdered detergent and never use fabric softeners. It's best for your microfibre to use detergent as less as possible and mostly just wash in cool/warm/hot water. Never mix/wash microfibre with any other clothes; always keep it separate from all other fabrics.5) If you feel your microfibre products have lost some of their softness and absorbency, then soak/wash them by hand in a bucket or in the machine with hot water and 1-2 teacups (depending on how many microfibres you're washing) of any cheap white vinegar; no detergent; then do a final water rinse to remove the vinegar; it's a great way to remove old buildup from your microfibre and make it soft and absorbent again.6) Do not wash pads/towels used for polishing/waxing with your other washing/drying/cleaning microfibres. The polish will coat your other towels and make them less soft/effective.7) Never wash towels used for tyres/wheels/engine bay with those used for the paint/body/interior. The metal and brake dust particles from wheels will contaminate your other clean paint/interior towels and cause scratches in the paint.8) Always try to clean/wash dirty microfibre pads/towels as soon as possible; if you can't, then atleast leave them soaking in a bucket with liquid detergent until you have time to wash; the aim is to not allow any wax/polish/dirt to dry/harden into the microfibre; much more difficult to clean once that happens.9) To wash pads/towels used for polish/wax, soak them in a hot water bucket with liquid detergent and repeatedly squeeze/scrub/rub them thoroughly against each other with your hands or use a toothbrush. Your hands and the towels should be underwater in the detergent while scrubbing/cleaning so make sure the water is not too hot for your hands. But you need heat to break up and melt the polish/wax off the pads so make it as hot as you can. Once you're satisfied with your scrubbing, squeeze out the pads/towels and then rinse them well in another bucket of hot or cool water; or just toss it in the washing machine for the final rinse after the first hot water scrubbing you did. You could also do the whole wash in the machine with hot water but it will not clean as well as doing it manually yourself.10) Never dry your washed microfibre in direct sunlight or at high temperatures in the washing machine dryer. Do not iron. Do not wash in water hotter than 60°C (that's the temperature in most home water heaters). Extreme heat will destroy microfibre.Sorry for the long read but I've been doing this since years and love to share my experiences/learning with those who might be looking for it. You can also see my profile for reviews of other great detailing products on Amazon. Best of luck and happy detailing.
