Which one of these kits is the best to start with?

Good question. It depends on the interest of the child. If they really like cars and trucks, I recommend starting with the Wheels Axles and Inclined Planes. If the child in interested in building things, I recommend the Buildings and Bridges. If the child is interested in motion and movement, Newton's Laws might be best. If the child in interested in how things work, Levers and Linkages, or Gears and Worm Drives might be best. If the child has a broad set of interests, you might consider getting the Simple Machines (it cam make the projects from the other kits). I don't believe that you can go wrong starting with any of the different sets.

Can I get the instruction manual for this separately?

The instructions are available on Engino's website but not the educational portion.

What are the pieces made of?

Sorry, I don’t know. It was a gift, did not open the package. The pictures showed pieces were similar to Lego pieces.

Is this set one that is found in the simple machines combo set?

Sorry, I’m not sure. I bought it by itself. The kids loved it, especially the catapult.
