Does it come with a sheath?

It does not come with a sheath.

how thick is the blade? and does it hold an edge well? I'm looking to make a bush knife out of this, would it be a good candidate?

The blade is a little over 1/16 thick. The edge holds very well. Probably will do very well for a bush knife, but not for batoning since there's no wedge shape past the grind. I had to reprofile the handle for more grip. Since it is so light. I really think shortening the machete into a knife would sacrifice a great function. I would just grind a clip point on it and a Scandi grind near the handle. And you'd then have a nearly perfect all in one tool.

why is the tip not sharp ?

A machete is not a tool for stabbing, but for slicing/cutting. A sharp tip might be hazardous to the user.

What are the best ways to sharpen the blade?

file the blade to get the profile you want. from there you can use an axe puck or a wet stone to keep it sharp. I prefer the puck.
