Yes, it has to have internet for the captioning to work.

Q: I have a land line in my house. Can I use the same phone number for this internet phone, and keep my land line as well?

This phone uses your land line for whoever is calling. It replaces a regular land line phone. It is NOT intended for use as an internet phone; it's internet connection is for the caption operator who listens to your caller and puts their remarks into text for display on the phone screen. The phone is for use by those with a hearing impairment.

Yes to both..it has an answering machine with lots of options and you can program it to flash (a bright light) when you have messages. It is a really great phone!
