Outer measurements: 17" high, about 14" wide with side pockets (but the whole thing can squishable) 8" deep. Interior main pocket: 16" high, 13" wide, 7" deep at bottom. Interior front pocket: 7" high, 9 1/2" wide, about 3 1/2" deep Hope that helps.

Will this be good for an 8th grader?

It will hold a laptop or ipad, a few books and a pencil case without any problem. There won't be a lot of extra room for much else, for example; I wouldn't suggest trying to fit a lunch box in it. The side pockets are large enough for a water bottle or maybe snacks, though. and the backpack itself isn't heavy, but seems fairly durable. Hope that helps.
