Does the front flap have gel inside of it? I'm wondering about embroidering a name on it or maybe an iron on.

There is no gel in the flap, there is however what seems to be a thin layer of foam inside of the flap.

Is it possible to clean the fabric outside the bag? How?

My kids seem to leave about half of their lunches inside their pack-its, so I have to wipe the inside out every day. I'll admit that I'm not great at cleaning the outside all the time, so it really doesn't get any attention at all. These do start to smell a bit like a sweaty elementary-aged child after a while, so when that happens I do a deep clean in my sink with water and dish soap. I submerge the whole thing and scrub it and it's gross how much dirt comes out! It takes forever to get the soap all out, which is the biggest headache with these as far as I'm concerned, but it hasn't stopped me from buying these over the past five years or so.

Does it have a small pocket for non lunch items? (like headphones, train pass, etc)

Nope. No pockets anywhere. That, to me, is a major design flaw. Check out my review I posted yesterday, for more info. :)

The actual label says China. You can get these same items at Meijer for the same price as Amazon. I would have gotten them at my local store (Meijer), but it was for my husband and the store only had bags for girls.
