At this price point exceptional performance
Cons.will flatline your mobiles built in graphic equaliser. Pros.separates the vocals and instruments, improved soundstage, music is more dynamic, tighter with less blurry base notes.A less compressed sound more faithful to what the studio producer intended.

Work well with iPhone XS max with smart battery case and Monolith m1060c
This is a good companion item for the Monolith m1060c headphones. The sound is better with this DAC/AMP than the Apple's lightning to 3.5mm adapter. Works with Apple's smart battery case. I can use the wireless charge pad while I use this DAC. The battery goes down about 20% per hour without charging.

First Impression is a big "WOW!"
So let me first say that this is my first DAC experience. In fact, I had been, for years, listening to 320 bitrate compressed audio (Spotify and my own collection) on my Macbook Pro through my Audio Technica ATH-M50X headphones into my Macbook Pro and iPhone 6, and was satisfied with the sound during that time. When Amazon Music HD/Ultra HD, with higher resolution and uncompressed audio, started last month, I signed up for a trial and was blown away. Then I bought this to get the full effect of uncompressed audio on my MBP and have been using it for a couple of days now.I wanted to write a review because there are so many mediocre or bad reviews here. I'm starting to really believe that collectively, star ratings/reviews here are getting harder and harder to take seriously, especially since people give bad (and good) reviews for the most inane reasons, like shipping speed or how it arrived. My review is about the product only and my only disclaimer is that this IS my first impression. If you're not familiar with Monoprice, they seem to be all about making high quality imitations of popular electronics for a far lower price. I've purchased studio monitors and a condenser mic for home recording and am happy with those purchases. After struggling with whether to buy the $200-300 AudioQuest's Dragonfly USB DAC, I decided to check Monoprice.com and yes, they have their version for $100. It is well constructed using a hard plastic case, and it works great. The improvement in audio quality (decompression and amplification) is irrefutable. Listening to high def audio with vs without this DAC is comparable to hearing a compact disc vs an MP3. The studio tracking really comes alive and encompassing. Two very minor complaints: One is trying to get the right volume balance between the volume controls on the DAC and the volume controls on the Mac. I haven't figured out how to set that up and could not find anything online. I'm not sure if it's really a big deal though; it sounds great right out of the box, so I should probably have not messed with it but, now the Mac's volume is limited to 3-4 settings. If anyone reading this has a suggestion on how to get this right, I'd appreciate it. The only other complaint is that unplugging/replugging, for some reason, affects the balance, so you have to manually have to open the "Sound" system preference to reposition it back to the center. Neither of these complaints warrants a star rating deduction.

I don't use this as designed, however it works really well for me...
I have an aftermarket Android headunit in my BMW E70. The unit usually routes audio to the AUX in of the car. I have connectyed this DAC to the Android units USB cable and routed the output to the same AUX in location. There is a noticable difference in the quality and especially clarity of the sound with this in the circuit. Initially I had a FIIO BTR5 installed ( much more expensive ) but it had some issues turning off and on with the car. I installed this as an alternative and it instantly just worked. To compare the sound with and without the DAC would be similar to listening to a 128k MP3 file, then the same song at 320k. Better clarity of both highs and lows, but also a little bit better sound staging as well. My car is setup with an aftermarket DSP so the difference is even more pronounced.

Best for bright/sibilant headphones
The sound coming out from this dac/amp is leaning to the warmer side of the frequency. All of my headphones are balanced or midrange focused so the Hidizs S8 suits me better.
