Q: Do these plates float?

Yes, this styling iron has top and bottom floating plates.

Q: Which one is better this one or chi?

I’ve never tried chi. This one is ok I do have to go over section more than once and it does tend to yank on hair. It works better if I blow dry my hair straight and then touch up with the duvolle
