1 commenter said that it collects about 100 gms of water. Has anyone else weighed it dry and saturated to figure out how much water this collects?

The amount of water it absorbs depends on the relative humidity surrounding it and also how long you leave it exposed. The "equilibrium moisture content" of silica gel at 90% humidity is about 35% by weight, and this product has 750 grams of silica gel, so about 260 grams of water at that relative humidity. However, at 50% relative humidity, this "EMC factor" is only about 25% and therefore can only hold about 180 grams of moisture. I have tested these indoors and outdoors in Oregon (50% and 90% relative humidities, more or less) and these numbers are roughly right. It took about 2 weeks for it to fully saturate in 90% relative humidity and probably twice that in 50% relative humidity. The rate of water adsorption slows down as it gets close to saturation. Note that at 100% relative humidity the amount of water vapor in a volume of 1000 cubic feet depends almost entirely on the temperature and is about 13 ounces at 50 degree Fahrenheit and 47 ounces at 90 degrees Fahrenheit. At 50% relative humidity, the water content would be half of that. It is probably better to look at devices like this as "moisture buffers" instead of "moisture adsorbers." If the silica gel is saturated at 90% relative humidity and you put it in a drier environment, say 50% relative humidity, it will actually release some of the trapped moisture until it reaches equilibrium again.Probably more than you wanted to know about this, but I have been studying it to see if I can find a solution for my boat while it is in storage, and I'd like to find something that doesn't need "recharging" every 2-6 weeks. By the way, it is NOT effective to "recharge" these in a gas oven because the combustion releases water vapor, making it difficult to ever get the silica gel really dry. I ended up buying an electric toaster oven to solve this problem. (Makes better toast, too!)

Are these cannisters made in the usa?

No.  The carton has "Made in China" printed beneath the UPC code.  There is no indication on the cannister.

can you open the canister and put something in it? like a cell phone that got dropped in water?

the lid is only the size of a dollar.  You could open it with a can opener and pour it in a dry peanut butter jar with the cell phone.

What are the dimensions? About how big is it? (e.g. Relative to the size of a soup can...)

The container is approx. 4 1/4 inches in diameter X 5 inches tall. Size of Large can. Bigger than the average soup can by far.  Hope this helps.
