Q: how do you set the time on this?

CLOCK SETTING:The Clock display is located in the center of the LCD screen.1. Press and hold the "SET" button on the back of the thermometer for 2 seconds to enter Clock Setting Mode."12 Hr" or "24 Hr" flashes.2. Press the "+" button on the back of the thermometer to toggle between 12 or 24 hour clock mode. Press "SET" to confirm. The hour digits flash.3. Press the "+" button to change the hours. Press "SET" to confirm. The minute digits flash.4. Press the "+" button to change the minutes. Press "SET" to confirm. The clock is set.Notes: If no buttons are pressed within one minute, the unit will automatically exit Clock Setting mode.The digits can only advance. If you pass the number you want, continue to press "+" to cycle through the numbers again. Press and hold down the "+" button to advance the digits quickly.

Sorry, mine still works, not sure of warranty, but for price you can just buy anothrr

Q: will it work without setting the clock?

Yes. You do not have to set the correct time for the weather reporting parts of the unit to work. However, you must put batteries in to make the weather station operate and there will therefore be some clock setting displayed.
