Q: I have an older Pearl export tom (late 90s to early 2000s). Will this still fit without modification?

Yes, this will fit any standard hoop. Keep in mind this suspends the tom from the hoop and can deform it. Flat, even hoops are a must for even tuning. I use this for a floor tom to bass drum conversion. You might want to use some felts behind the plate against the shell to avoid twisting of the hoop.

Q: Will this work on a sonor tom?

I wouldn't know. But it didn't work on my Tama set. I think this is designed specifically for Pearl.
