Decent uke for the money.
Decent instrument for the money. Purchased for car travels. Something I can toss in the back of the car and not worry about. It is nice looking. The body construction appears to be plywood with mahogany veneer. The neck seems to be solid mahogany. Read in other reviews about this uke being hard to tune or stay in tune. Nylon strings will taking a bit of stretching before they reach the desired pitch. I expect the strings to slip until they get settled in. After the first day they seem to be slipping a bit and hold their tuning for a while before needing to be retuned. I expect this to be the case for a new instrument with new strings. The tone is not bad for a cheap instrument. The intonation is decent as well. The 12th fret harmonic and fretted note are close enough when I tested with a tuner. The "E" string was a little sharp but the others were fine. The action seems a little too low and strings slap a bit further up the fretboard but for strumming chords it isn't that noticeable. Overall it is a playable and decent sounding uke for the price.

This item is well made and really beautiful. The mahogany is top quality and the sound is amazing. Very happy with my purchase

A poorly made toy
This is junk. The action is so high that when you fret above the the first few frets the notes are a semi-tone too high, which makes it unplayable. If you have a chord spanning more than four frets the notes will all be out of tune relative to each other. The tuning machine sleeves do not fit properly and are so loose they fall out, or when strung, creep up out of the headstock while playing. I just bought the Donner tenor uke, and what a difference a few extra dollars make - excellent build quality, sound and action. I expected the Joy to be a bit rough but thought it might make a fun project to mod and upgrade, but no, this thing is irredeemable and so it's back to the warehouse - or landfill - with you!

I hate writing 3 star reviews...
because no one reads them. But, here goes...I bought this to consider for adoption by an absolute beginner course for seniors. One concern about inexpensive instruments is the quality of the quality control. The fretwork on the instrument I received was unacceptable. (See photo.) Other reviews found everything okay, so I chalk this up to quality control. If I wanted only one instrument, I might try again, but I'm looking for a half dozen or more, so back it goes and my search continues.
