Insights that draw one to think deeply and question the medical narrative on health
Bridging a complex, scientific thesis with deeply perceptive, philosophical contemplation, Dr. Cowan writes of the cusp where life comes into being, and what separates something that is alive from something that is dead. This force of life, he writes, is non-material, but is primarily expressed in the material world in the structure of water in our cells. This book brings together studies and personal observations to illustrate the nature of the water that makes up the cells of our bodies. It proposes the existence in our cells of water in a gel-like structure - as opposed to liquid, solid or gas - as a foundation of human health, and the the ground for emotional well-being and spiritual knowing. In this view, it is the quality of this water that allows healthy or unhealthy manifestations of our genetic make-up, rather than our genes predetermining the kind of life we will have.Cancer is ubiquitous, as are other forms of human illness, in our times. The book talks of cancer as a large-scale collapse of normal water structure in the cells of the body, leading to the formation of tumours. Modern living, with its disconnection from the spiritual dimension of life, as well as its many stresses and toxicities, is a major cause of the breakdown of this water structure.A profound book that encourages one to contemplate the nature of life, its expression in our material bodies, and its deterioration and eventual end in cases of chronic illness, of which cancer is the most overshadowing of all. A book that takes a different path from mainstream medicine and common thinking, and encourages the viewer to take responsibility for his body and health, and understand it himself, rather than rely on an elite group of people in white coats. At times complex and challenging, but still accessible to anyone with an interest in learning and reflecting on these topics.Like other books by Thomas Cowan, this is a book that can radically affect one's understanding of the body and of the material processes of life.

Read this book, you will learn about more than 'just' cancer.
Beyond the information and ideas, which certainly are more than worthy of considering, I found this book one imbued with generosity and kindness — to the reader, because every time the long scientific words threatened to overtake me, he digressed to a simple example or analogy that made me understand exactly what he was writing; to the patient and family, as hope was held out, that alongside any conventional treatment there were avenues to explore, and no demand was made to consider 'only' the alternatives. He was even kind to the researchers and practitioners he disagreed with, however on-point his critiques. Dr. Cowan presented a book written humbly, generously, and beautifully. When is the last time I couldn't put a non-fiction book down? Maybe never! Philosophical, clear-minded, and filled with simple suggestions for how to look at things a bit differently, this book (beyond the medical subject) really maps out a way to live well, and is applicable to much more than the subject at hand. I've already shared it with friends, and have many more I want to give it to.
