Q: Are these strong enough to be routed into wood and still hold knives?

I have not tried this, but I think they are strong enough. I keep a set of stainless steel measuring cups, plus a couple of knives , on one of mine and it works fine.

Q: would the magnets be strong enough to mount the bar vertically and not have the knives slip down?

As long as the knives are horizontal. Blade needs to contact each of the two strips on it to hold. One is not enough if you have knives with weight to them.

Q: Can it be fixed on tile backsplash

If you get screws long enough to anchor the strips after you drill through the backsplash I see why not.

Q: Will the magnet work with covers over the blades?

I don’t have covers on mine so I don’t know about that. The magnet is strong but may not be strong enough with a cover. I love it as it is.
