Who would enjoy a book on protocol and diplomacy??? You, probably. Check this out.
I read Capricia Penavic Marshall’s book because it was the selection of a new book club I had just joined. Let me be more clear – I would not have selected this book in a million years. My usual genres are history, politics, crime fiction and spy fiction. So what did I think of “Protocol: The Power of Diplomacy and How to Make It Work for You” (PR) ? I was shocked - I enjoyed it thoroughly. It hooked me within the first 30 pages or so.Why is it so special? First off, PR is very well written. The prose is masterful, and the structure is perfect. Capricia is a subject matter expert, having served as Social Secretary for President Clinton and Chief of Protocol for President Obama. She covers everything, and what makes the book so entertaining and instructive are the many, many anecdotes that she weaves into her 400 page book. She knows everybody so she also draws upon the experiences and stories she has gleaned from others who preceded her as well as colleagues from countries around the world. Want to know the tradition for proper social greetings in Germany? It’s in here. So are a very number of very funny stories like how Capricia greeted Mexico’s President Calderon at the White House (see the video). And touching stories, like Obama’s gift presentation to Elizabeth ll. And Obama with the New Town families. I also enjoyed the many little tidbits about dealing with government leaders from all over the world. Finally, PR offers tons and tons of practical tips about meeting and socializing, things that can apply to your next door neighbor as well as the Prime Minister of India. I am pleased to say I have met an Indian PM; I only wish I had the opportunity to read PR beforehand.Highly recommended.

A must read for navigating
This book, filled with practical and meaningful advice, is a must read for those seeking to operate successfully at work in a civil and diplomatic manner. Marshall shares her own experiences -- the good and the bad -- of working at the highest levels of government globally and how to handle difficult and often high stakes situations with tact, aplomb, and grace. She provides insightful tips about protocol and how it can make or break a situation. It is a fun read but has the benefit of also providing useful advice for those seeking to advance in the workplace. This is the go to book for etiquette and protocol in the modern world.

Beyond the Veil
This book gives readers access to the hidden realms of diplomacy. I was amazed by the sheer volume of considerations that need to be addressed when holding a diplomatic talk. It is incredible to think that even a seemingly small thing that goes awry can have significant impacts on diplomatic relations. This book really makes you aware of all the hard work that goes on hidden from the public's view. I am so glad that is not my job as I would be a nervous wreck with managing all of those minute details that have the propensity to become career disasters! Great read though!

A TRUE GEM AND A HOME LIBRARY MUST HAVE
My mother forced me to attend protocol school as an adolescent and I HATED EVERY SECOND OF IT! However, these principles stuck.Fast forward into my 40’s and I still find myself using these norms in my everyday life. They even helped me advanced and lead a successful career although I only have an associates degree. And are now the reason why I am starting my own etiquette consulting business.Capricia is right! “Knowing protocol is like having superpowers.” And I am so grateful to her for expounding my knowledge and also sharing them with all.The world would be a much better place if each person took the time to read this book!

Understanding protocol beyond the usual tactical arrangements
Insightful. Substantive. Offers a perspective-enhancing view of protocol as an outcomes-oriented, relationship-building platform. All in all, a good reference and a great read.

This is a must read for any aspiring leader
In such laidback and casual times, it may not dawn on us the importance of structure and protocol. However, I’ve learned they are essential to understanding between people. If these tips are good enough for a summit meeting, they’re good enough for a boardroom or any meeting of any organization.
