Berlin: Portrait of a City

From an avid Berlin book purchaser (I have probably 50 + books on Berlin - the coolest city on the planet) this is the best. Every photo in this monster sized book is a true museum quality work of art. Really evocative. This is a book to be savored. You won't be disappointed. If you are looking for THE Berlin photo book - this is it.

I left Berlin, early in 1937, aged five and a half, not to return until 1983, as a visitor, but I have childhood memories of the city, some of which go back to before I was three. Reinforcing those memories were tales I heard from my parents and the occasional, non-war-related movie. To see pictures of the streets and the faces, the clothing and the shop displays going back to before the First World War has been a source of continuing fascination for me. As is only proper in a book of this sort, the horrors that beset Berlin under Hitler and during the Second World War are also given their proper place in this book, a reminder that even one of the world's most sophisticated cities can be all but destroyed in degeneration and nevertheless, with appropriate assistance, as, for instance, the air lift, be resurected and restored. The photos were excellent, and the commentary, in English, German and French, insightful and instructive. Priced in the mid-thirties, the book sold at a substantially lower price than it did at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

I received this book and it was a wonderful surprise. So worth the cost and the condition of it was like new. Also it was received days before it was promised. It was a special birthday gift and the recipient was thrilled beyond words. Lots of ohhs and ahhs and oh wows!! were her comments. So thank you again for being Amazon!!! Great book. Looks beautiful.

When I saw this book on amazon.com I had to have it. I've enjoyed every minute and it take a long long time for each page. It's my go to book for my memories of Berlin in 2002 with my translator leading the way.

Another excellent review of a major city by Taschen. Huge book packed with excellent historic and current photos.A must for lovers of this renewed city.

For those of us who have known Berlin from the erection of the wall and have been there a lot this is a superior volume!

As one who lived in Berlin during several interesting historical periods, I find this book excellent! Thoroughly recommended!

Taschen as usual gives us magnificent books with hundreds of pertinent photos at a reasonable price. This very big book illustrates a city that has changed many, many times as it was at the epicenter of 20th century history.

Vor mehreren Jahren bestellt und auch heute holen wir es gerne noch hervor. Es ist einfach toll, damit zu zweit oder auch alleine auf dem Sofa zu sitzen und sich in den Bildern und Gedanken zu verlieren. Jedesmal findet man etwas Neues zu entdecken, ... man kommt ins Nachdenken, ins Träumen, ... auf jeden Fall sein Geld wert.

Geiles Buch, wo man sich in der Vergangenheit entspannen kann.Schöne Bilder, kann man schon mit etwas Wein genießen. Auch ein Ice breaker mit Freunde. Wurde mal empfiehlen!

Das war schon ein sehr schweres Paket, das bei mir ankam. Über die historische Korrektheit kann ich wenig sagen. Ich habe mich gefreut über die vielen Fotos aus der Kaiserzeit, weil Bilder nun einmal am besten einen Eindruck von Situationen vermitteln und diese Zeit mit ihren zum Glück überholten Lebensumständen recht lang zurück liegt. Die Zwischenseiten mit dem anthrazitfarbenen Text auf blau-metallic Papier lassen sich schwer lesen, aber das sind nur einige.Mehr als 100 Euro hätte ich für das Buch aber nicht ausgegeben.
