You can use each one for a different task. Consider a turn signal switch...one way is to bulbs on the left, the other way bulbs one the right, center is off. One way could be bulbs and the other a heater fan...or whatever. Great switch for universal uses. Hope this helps. Lew

About the function, this switch is ON-OFF-ON not momentary type, it means the switch actuator will not return back to centre OFF position when you release finger. So you should conside which function do you prefer when you are using this switch to control WINCH IN/WINCH OUT.

Q: Would this work for 18vdc 40a?

The short answer is MAYBE. If you are drawing all 40 amps at 18VDC, then i would be concerned. The rating on any electrical device is what that device will handle at maximum performance. Yes, they can do more, but not forever! The switch would handle 18VDC all day as long as the amperage is low...meaning the "LOAD" it is supplying is not so great that the resistance (what it takes to power the end device) is not substantial. Not a clear answer to your question, but "IF" you could measure the resistance at the device, given the 18VDC source, and do the math... I say "Try it and see." These are pretty sturdy switches.
