I have a 4 stage and not sure which way the pads go from bottom to top

I have a 5 stage, but it's the same,.. ; On the very bottom tray it gets two filters, course (colored, or black filter) under a white fine filter. That's it! But I line every tray upperwards with a with white (fine) filter. I can ring out the course filter many times before I feel like it needs to be replaced, but the white ones I only ring out once before replacing when I clean my 35gal fish tank every 3 to 4 months.
