It is sonic vibration. I prefer it to the spin one because it doesn't tangle my hair during use.

Q: I really like this facial cleanser, but mine is very warm when I take it out of the charging station. Is this a problem?

Do you keep it plugged in? If so No. If you charge and unplug it. Yes there's something wrong with the battery. I only charge mine when needed. That will prolong the life of the battery. I use mine in the shower every night. Hope this helped with your question.
