Comfortable, Light, but Sturdy
I like a more traditional walking shoe. After reading other reviews, I was not sure that I would like these, but with my previous experience with Rockports being very positive, I decided to take a chance. The shoes arrived we packaged and in excellent condition. The size is perfect and and I love the sole--lugged but also cushioned. The look is traditional, and so far, they have held up well. Some other reviewers commented that the look was "pleather" rather than leather. Having had shoes from other makers (Johnston and Murphy, Allen Edmonds), this is waterproofed leather. It has a different sheen than natural leather, but does a great job of repelling water. All in all, I highly recommend this shoe.

Field Tested and Approved!
Great Shoes! I was considering getting some Nike's but went with these because I work at Loaf N jug (a convenience store) and there is always water around. The second day I was wearing these shoes I was doing the outside trash. When I lifted one of the bags out of the trash can, it leaked a black liquid across one of my shoes. A man watched it all happen, Luckily that awful liquid didn't get inside my shoe and I just shook it off with my foot and wiped it down. I am very glad I went with these because if I went with those white Nike's, I would have been very unhappy after that incident. The Verdict:They are very comfortable, I stand in them over 8 hours a day and my feet really appreciate it.They are water proof, I encountered water a few times and my feet always stayed dry and clean. They are lightweight, I don't get fatigued from wearing them, usually leather shoes have some weight to them.Overall, they are one of the best choices for work, college and formal wear.

Not perfect but good usefull shoes!
More than 15 years ago I discovered that the conductors on the Boston Commuter trains wore this particular shoe because they held up pretty well in very bad weather. I have a 70 year deformed hip/leg condition requiring a one inch lift. I have used a very skilled shoe maker who will take off part of sole on one shoe, fasten a light rubber shaped lift followed by a rubber sole. This is a far better solution to providing acceptable foot wear than going the orthopedic shoe route. I can have the shoe set for about $160 at todays prices compared with $350 for orthopedic shoes. I wear a pair or two of these continually seven days a week. Recently the construction of the shoes has deteriorated. The current construction uses a glued overlapping top folded underneath the foot with a sole glued to the folded overlap. A fake sole sewing pattern is used/glued on to mimic a conventional shoe. The gluing is deteriorating on the recent pairs requiring the shoes to be reglued, poor quality! I wear only white cotton socks washed with normal detergent and significant Clorox. The inside of the shoes remain very clean, flexible, like new, until they wear our in a 2 or 3 years. This is a very attractive solution to a life long problem. I will celebrate my 82 year birthday this month. DOB 3/21/1933!

Affordable Waterproof Comfort
This is my third pair. Bought my first pair about 2 years ago and then bought a brown pair to alternate. My black shoes get worn a lot more and the soles have finally started becoming a bit thin. I have about 35 minutes of walking on my daily commute so I need comfortable shoes. I haven't found a more comfortable dress shoe yet, in this price range. I have seen a lot of criticism over build quality diminishing, but the shoes I have purchased have been very comfortable and I would consider them long lasting. They are definitely water proof which is great for the Pacific Northwest weather I endure. I can stomp through puddles and torrential rain knowing my feet with be dry when I arrive at work. I was even standing in 1" of water at work once when a bathroom sink was flooding and my feet were still dry. A touch of shoe polish every 8 months and these shoes continue to look near new. I did have to replace my laces about 1 year in though. If there is a more comfortable, well fitting, but dressy shoe out there in the same price range, I would love to know about it. Otherwise, I believe you will be hard pressed to find a better shoe in this category.*****UPDATEThe laces issue appears to have been addressed. My newest shoe laces seem much sturdier and I believe will last the life of the shoe. The soft soles do wear through quicker than I like, but this is likely why they are so damn comfortable. This is still my business casual shoe of choice.

Best orthopedic dress shoe?
This is a very comfortable, roomy shoe I picked for dress shoes since I have an extremely bad bunion and flat feet. Just be aware if you are buying for dress shoes like me, they definitely look orthopedic and not like fancy polished shoes. The toe box could be a bit larger, but since I got the wide ones and these shoes are bit long for me, they are fine. My Keen Austin shoes are more comfortable and have a wider toe box, but they do not seem to offer a dress shoe. I hope they hold up, as some reviews say they do not.

Might be the best shoes I've ever owned
I've been wearing them for a month, so this might be premature, but I LOVE THESE SHOES! I'm a wide 6.5, and I've always bought 7.5 or 8 to fit my feet by width. I bought this in a 7 because I was planning on adding extra insoles, and it fit perfectly! Granted, I do have about a half inch extra toe space, the shoe cradles my feet just how I wanted. I work 12 - 16 hour days, about 4-6 of those are manual labor, and about 1 hour of sitting down total. With the combination of Dr Scholl's Work Insoles ($10 at walmart), my feet aren't in absolute pain at the end of the day, and after rest, I'm ready for the next day. When I put these on, I my feet feel invincible. The materials are very high quality, and I've scuffed them quite a bit which polishes right off. The stitching appear to be very durable and heavy duty. I look forward to wearing these for more than a year, until I wear out the bottom.
