A must for artists using any type of pencil.
The first sharpener which has not broken the centres of coloured pencils and pastel pencils. It gives a fantastic point and its roll round sharpening action means it will not break the central core (as long as the pencil has not been dropped and the core already cracked). I have used it clamped to the table edge but also just as easy to use on any table as it has rubberised feet which prevent sliding or movement. It is already saving me money inexpensive pencils and crayons (previously endlessly sharpened and broken). I am delighted with the purchase which I also believe is very good value for money. I would definitely recommend it to any artist.

Superb sharpener - and gratitude to a fellow reviewer
This is the perfect sharpener for the graphite and coloured pencils I use in my drawing - the extreme points it produces are absolutely brilliant for detail, especially when I am drawing fur. But I must say a HUGE thank you to fellow reviewer Ethan Diment for his "heads-up" that if it suddenly stops working, it is probably because a piece of lead has fallen into the sharpener, in which case you need to take the handle out so you can remove the lead. It happened to mine after I had perfectly sharpened a dozen or so pencils, and without Ethan's review, I would have thought the sharpener was broken, and wouldn't even have realised that the handle is removable, as it isn't obvious. He saved me from unnecessarily returning a wonderful little tool. Thank you! Incidentally, I do think Derwent should include this simple and quick bit of "trouble-shooting" in their instructions.

Long sharp points
When I was a small child in the 60's my dad used to have an old solid metal and chrome sharpener and it was old then, it was sturdy metal, heavy and built like tank. I bought this and it produces very sharp points although they are quite long. My only minor complaint being this is just pressed metal with a shiny coat to look nice, the pull out mechanism feels flimsy in comparison so hopefully it will last 30 years. So far it seems to do a good job , no complaints at the price. Easy to use

just doesnt work - simple as!!
sorry to be so negative but this sharpener just did not work. I was suspicious when it arrived as the packaging looked a bit worse for wear and the handle was not fastened on. However we attached the handle gave it a go and the pencils sharpened finely. However after about 6 pencils that was it, The handle flopped about, wouldnt bite so it couldnt sharpen. We checked it all made sure the blade was clean etc. etc. and all it did was chew the wood round the pencil and break the point that was on. Total and utter waste of my money and didnt do my expensive pencils much good either. Returned it, very disappointed and looking for something now that will work.

Shapes well
It's new and, so far, it has sharpened graphite, coloured pencils and charcoal pencils well.

Really Really Good, so I’m Told.
Bought for my dad who is a good artist. Personally I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler. To say he is over the moon with it would be an understatement. He tells me the sharpener points a really good point on your pencils and is very simple to use. He has recommended it to all his fellow art school buddies.

Sharp but with flaws
The pencil sharpener gives a fantastic point when sharpened, however there are a couple of flaws to note.1. you have to make sure you have inserted it into the machine correctly otherwise you don't feel it "release" when its finished. It will otherwise keep going and eat your pencil2. It eats your pencil. To get the long sharp point, it'll take a considerable amount of your pencil which is painful when the pencils are very expensive such as the faber castells. You can see the difference in my pictures.3. In order for the pencil to be sharpened the front grips the pencil and leaves quite sharp indentations into the pencil, somewhat ruining them. Again its not nice when the pencils are quite expensive.4. You really do have to hold the sharpener down when using it otherwise it won't sharpen. If you can look past these points, it really does gove a fantastic sharp point.

Great point.
This sharpener arrived today. After months of disappointing sharpeners I held my breath when I tried it.But all is well. Excellent long points on my pencils. I do not like the short ones. And the wood was not savaged.I am delighted with it. I hope it lasts well. So far, so very good. Thank you for producing an efficient product Derwent.
