An outstanding fantasy film
What an outstanding fantasy film. It has that quintessential Burton mix of sadness, romance and playful black humour that he hasn't nailed in a while. The time travel works a lot better than I expected; it really touches on that poignant loneliness/isolation at the heart of Burton's most notable freaks and outsiders. Eva Green is perfection as Miss Peregrine. Sam Jackson is a very fun villain, while the monsters are a sort of cross between The Babadook and Jack Skellington (ie. not for young kids). Several sequences almost had me cheering, particularly the ones involving the sunken ship. As a film, it doesn't all work--the plot gets a little too twisty toward the end, and there are probably too many "peculiars" involved--but when it does work, it's gorgeous. The 3-D definitely helps bring it all to life. It isn't one of the strongest 3-D blu-rays out there (not as consistently impressive as Star Wars: TFA or Mad Max: Fury Road), but there's plenty to like here. The scene where time stops and the raindrops float outside the screen is nicely done. The Blackpool Pier sequence is a riot, with CG monsters galore. Several times throughout the film I grinned at the blend of 3-D depth and visual design. It's a treat for the eyes. Don't expect copious pop-outs a la Ghostbusters, but the 3D is immersive--for this Burton fan, that's a huge bonus.Really glad I own this. It's one I'll revisit often.

In the loop
Samuel L Jackson is an absolute hoot in Tim Burton’s highly entertaining and visually stunning 2016 fabulously dark fantasy adventure. As shape-shifting Mr. Barron, the leader of a band of scientists-turned-monsters his scenery-chewing performance steals every scene he is in. The narrative follows Asa Butterfield’s character who gradually realises that the fantastical bedtime stories told to him by his grandfather about a peculiar home in Wales for peculiar children with paranormal abilities are unbelievably true, as are the dire warnings about monsters. With a Groundhog Day meets Marvels X-Men vibe the movie’s increasingly convoluted plot involving magic and time portals is wonderfully captivating with the director’s trademark imaginative CGI on display with a number of marvelously bizarre scenes. There are some notable actors present and along with Eva Green’s splendid performance as the pipe-smoking Miss Peregrine sound support comes from Terence Stamp, Chris O’Dowd, Allison Janney, Rupert Everett and Judi Dench. An enjoyable diversion from life’s travails and definitely worth watching.

Good but not classic.
I was looking really forward to this Blu-ray having seen the rather long trailer at the cinema.Sadly it appears they put most of the best bits in it as seems to be the case a lot these days. Its a complicated story of children with special abilities living an in alternative world that seems to appear in our world on some kind of 24 hour time loop.Thats as much as I could understand anyway.I said it was complicated. In the event big bad Sam L Jackson is out to do no good and that's where our earth comes in after he discovers the loop so to speak and has to help them.Eva Green is as beautiful and capable as ever as the childrens guardian and Asa Butterfield has turned into a competent adult actor.Jackson is Jackson in evil mould. No bad thing. All the peculiar children put in lovely performances and their powers are showcased brilliantly by the director Tim Burton who can make weird movies like this in his sleep. The effects are spectacular and build to an exciting climax.Judy Dench also makes a fleeting appearance count. Its a 12 certificate and I would say this is just about right as some scenes are quite scary. The quality of the Blu-Ray is wonderful and there enough extras to satisfy any movie geek.Very good but not the classic I hoped for.

Very good film
A really good film based on the Ransom Riggs book, the film is enjoyable for teenagers/young adults but the film differs slightly from the original book. Shame that it didn't make as much as expected at the box office so subsequent funding not forthcoming for the other five books. Characters are strong, special effects are good and a jolly good film to watch.
