Q: My grandson wants this game but has the oringinal 3ds. Do use have to buy him the card reader for the cards?

yes, you are best buying the game & card reader double pack (NFC Reader), the cards arent essential but add an extra dimension to the game.

Q: can you use the cards and the reader with the 2ds?

Yes they should,the reader says it is compatible with 2DS, as well as 3DS. I haven't tried it with a 2DS myself, so it should work fine.

Q: Do you need anything extra for the characters to be placed on or anything scanned etc?

While you can technically scan these cards on the Wii U, they are unlikely to be compatible with any of the games right now. The only games that they are currently known to work for is Animal Crossing New Leaf with the Welcome Amiibo update.To scan these cards in the game you either need a New Nintendo 3DS (this one has coloured ABXY buttons) or a standard 3DS/2DS and an amiibo reader.

Q: Does this work with the nintendo switch?

Yes. They do work in Animal Crossing: New Horizons after you have unlocked the campsite but I’m not sure if they Work in Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild ect.
