QUALITY PRODUCES OF OUR ANCIENT RICE FOR HEALTHY LIVING!!!!
Awesome to find the Ancient Red rice on Amazon. Our family have always been a big fan of feeding on the ancient rice and were looking for options. Since we feel that "Health is Wealth". We have been eating the produce of Rigel spices ( Maappilai Samba, Poongar, Seeraga Samba ) over the last 3 years when it was made available in Frisco, TX. Prior to that we have tried couple of options but were never satisfied with the quality for the price that we pay. But produces from Rigel Spices are of the BEST QUALITY AND TASTE. Our Kids love the Idlies and Dosa made out of the red rice ( Maappilai Samba, Poongar) and the Biriyani, Pulav, variety rices made out of Seeraga Samba.. We also try different Indian dishes using the Red rice and that itself is a separate blog activity on another day..We were so HAPPY to see the Rigel Spices produce made available through Amazon too. Since - it make it easier sometimes when the stock is not there with the distributors/retail ( due to the demand ) and it is so convenient to have it delivered directly to your home at one click.Yes - it might look that the price is slightly high. But if we dont invest in our HEALTH now, we might end spending for the doctors, medicine and end up late realization with all the pain, losing all the time. So, Better Invest in HEALTHY living by eating QUALITY PRODUCES for a graceful future.THANKS SO MUCH for bringing back these ancient rices at our door step. We often dont realize all the hard work and efforts put in by the farmers to get the food on our plates.RESPECT, APPRECIATE AND SUPPORT FARMERS WHO STRIVE HARD TO BRING THESE QUALITY AND TASTY PRODUCES FOR A HEALTHY LIVING OF EACH ONE OF US, SO WE CAN STEP INTO GRACEFUL FUTURE!!!!!!

The Bag [Rigel Spices] poongar red rice, 4lbs -- smelled horrible, like faint smell of funeral home.
This bag of [Rigel Spices] poongar red rice (4_lbs) -- smelled like as my children would describe - as a dead person. When I smelled the bag, it had a faint smell of a funeral home in the fabric. It turned my stomach immediately into knots all around, to the point where I couldn't eat for the next couple of hours. These sellers must be careful of where they're storing food that they're selling to the public. They cannot dump their old products or that of their family or friends off on unsuspecting customers ordering online. We don't get to see, touch, or smell the product in person, in exchange for the convenience of home delivery/office delivery, or for delivery to a relative or friend that is elderly, disabled, feeble, or sickly ... to assist them at times with a simple chore here or there, that can temporarily alleviate their hardship of grocery shopping, that may seem much easier for many of us to do.That product has to be rid of in the cellar canceled about selling awful condition products that might look good online and in pictures, but smell horrible or offensive.

Nutritious Red Rice
Good for blood sugar control. However, there are sand grains in the bag. You need to wash it properly, under running water, to remove them.

Tastes and smells of mildew
This may be what the rice is supposed to taste like, but it’s very off-putting, and didn’t improve with soaking and cooking. The texture is great. It’s unfortunate that this is a NON-RETURNABLE item on Amazon. I’m working with the manufacturer to see if they will extend me a refund.

Earthy taste
We are trying to eat less white rice in our household and thought we’d try red rice because of its nutritional benefits. This is a big 4lb bag and the rice is very pretty. It has a reddish purple color. For ease, we like to cook it in the pressure cooker. High pressure for 20 mins. Let it natural release for another 15 minutes. Then, fluff it and let the moisture evaporate a bit before eating. It taste fine reheated as well. This is an acquired taste. It’s hard to describe, but I would say it has an earthy flavor. The kids didn’t like it that much, but the adults didn’t mind it. We like to make a lot of bowl type dinner, which this is perfect for because it adds a bit of texture. It reminds me of brown rice, but with some earthiness. I will throw in a few spoonfuls to my Indian briyani rice bowl or Mexican fajita rice bowl. It helps us to cut back down on our white rice consumption without feeling like we are missing out on anything.

A Red Rice That Requires Overnight Soaking, Has A Cooked Texture Similar To Farro, And A Musty Aroma
Rigel Spices Poongar Ancient Red Rice is described by the manufacturer as a rice that is considered to play a role in balancing the female hormones as the name Poongar symbolizes females. The 4lb bag of red rice is placed in a traditional rice bag with a thread sealed closure which means it is not resealable. I hope the manufacturers reconsider this for future efforts for ease of storing. The rice grains are very short and have an earthy aroma to them. When washing the rice, the water does not get cloudy like when washing sushi or medium grain rice. To cook the rice, the manufacturer noted to drain the overnight soaked rice and transfer it to a pressure cooker, add 3-4 cups of water and cook on a medium flame for 4 whistles and turn to low flame and let it remain for 5-8 minutes. This was the first time that I have had to soak rice overnight before cooking it. Since I do not own a stove top pressure cooker, I decided to soak the rice overnight and attempt to make the rice in my rice pot. I was successful and the cooked rice had a delightful chew and surprisingly the prominent musty aroma that was present when I first opened the bag was equally as dominating even after the overnight soak and cooking. Visually, the grains plumped up but were easily separated and distinguishable similar to Basmati rice. When eating, the texture reminded me of a whole grain like farro. I wish the manufacturer would have printed at least a recipe or two for newcomers to this rice like me to provide inspiration and additional guidance. Each 1/4 cup of dry rice has 160 calories, 1g Total Fat, 34g Total Carbohydrate, and 3g Protein. It is a Product of India. It is a fine rice but not one that I would re-order.

Tastes like mothballs
I could not stomach more than 3 bites of this rice. It tastes like it was stored in a box of mothballs. Waste of money. Had to throw it out.
